Another arsenal question : )
« on: May 13, 2003, 06:12:44 PM »
Hey everyone,

As we all do, I'm trying to figure out what the heck to do with all of the equipment that I've got, and I need some help. I would probably be labeled as a tweener. I have medium revs, high track, above average speed. I am comfortable swining the lane when needed, but usually play straighter up second arrow or a mild swing if it's there. Here is my current array of balls and the conditions I tend to use them on:

Lane 1 Cherry Bomb --Med to Med-heavy w/ clean backends
Hammer Blade Solid --Heavy mediums or meds w/ light carrydown
Hammer Blade Pearl -- Lighter meds (Although it can handle heavier)

I just got these three balls in a trade, and I here is what I'd like them to do for me.

Storm Trauma Response -- Soup, the heaviest of the heavy
Storm Super Power            -- Not sure
Storm El Nino Wrath          -- Light conditions, the very dry.

I've thrown a Response in the past, so I'm pretty confident as to how to drill it and setup the coverstock. However, I have no idea on the other 2.
I'm totally clueless on the Super Power, and the only thought that I have on the Wrath is to polish the heck out of it. I would like people who have thrown these balls to suggest drilling layouts and coverstock prep, and to tell me where they think the most overlap in my overall arsenal may occur. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for all of the help.

Lol, Ragnar.  I heard the same thing about the Response though.

Response is a decent ball for the first 50 games.

Had 3 guys in my league watch their's die about 1/2 way through the season

I would say that the Elixer is an absolute must on that ball.

Gene,
Super Power....very versatile / strong ball!  I loved mine !!

Here's what I would do....either one of two things...

either polish is slighty to go under the Blade and above the pearl, OR, polish the Blade solid and have the Super Power be your second step down (carrydown)
either way would work.

OR....
drill the Super Power different than the Blade for a totally different path to the pins (hook shape and/or characteristic) for a different look / angle of attack.  For example, if the Blade is 4x4, go with a 4x1 for a smooth arcing look.

To recap:
The Super Power could fit BELOW the Blade Solid if polished.
The Blade solid can be polished and the Super Power left in box to go under the CBomb.
Either way, separate them with a different drill to get more variety out of your arsenal. This way you can have two different ways to attack the mediums you see.

Personal opinion, I liked the Super both box and polished.  However I had it drilled 2 different ways.  Box was 4 1/2 x 4 1/2, polished was 4x2.

Good luck

Thanks for all of the help so far everyone.  Jeffrevs, I will probably take your advice and use different patterns and/or surface prep to give different looks on the lane. As far as what others have said of the Wrath and Response, I've seen the Wrath in action on dry lanes and it gave a nice read and hit very well, and I've thrown a Response in the past and thought that ball was okay too. I realize that it will need Elixir to keep it from dying out, but on the right amount of oil that ball is a winner. Just because Storm discontinued the ball doesn't make it bad. Most people just didn't like it because they never found got to use it on the intended conditions.

Gene,
I bowl with a guy who polishes his Response and uses it on a fresh medium-medium heavy synthetic house shot with screaming backends.  So in the right situation, the Response polished can work as well.  Seen him throw numerous 250s-260 games this season with it, box AND polished.

Caveat: I've never thrown one.......just seen it thrown a bunch.....
