Targeting Breakpoint
« on: July 07, 2003, 10:53:57 AM »

Just wondering if anyone here uses the breakpoint as main target for a strike.

Read about it in BTM in '96 and have tried using it off and on without much success.

Lol, I don't target anything.  I'm a feel bowler.  I'll watch a good shot and remember what it feels like, then I'll just repeat it.

I usually target around the arrows, but if you need help getting some length, target way down the lane - it seems to help me extend and get the ball out to where it needs to be on dryer/flying backends.

In Ron Clifton's tip's on his website, there is an excellent discussion of the importance of breakpoint as part of targeting. The following is an excellent excerpt from "Breakpoints and Drawing Lines on the Lane...Part #1":

quote:
Using your breakpoint as part of your target line can simplify the game greatly. Using this method we can shorten a 60 foot lane to only 20 feet. That's because our break point is going to be 40 to 45 feet down the lane in most cases.

This is an excellent summary of the value of the breakpoint technique. It really will improve your game if you can get over the 'discomfort' curve of this type of targeting.

There are several ways of going about utilizing breakpoint, but the point is to understand that simply using the arrows is limiting, and that using breakpoint as part of your targeting can significantly improve your game. Many who learned the traditional "arrows and dots" sometimes bristle at utilizing breakpoint in overall targeting strategy, but the importance of the technique is real.

Read Ron's tips and give it a try.

I usually target a breakpoint and find where I have to hit to get the ball there. There are very few bowlers who ever lived that could hit one board exactly every time they throw the ball. So targeting a board is almost a waste, because most of the time you will not hit that board perfectly. If you target a breakpoint, usually that breakpoint area is almost 3-4 boards wide.

I like those odds better

I'm curious as to how many of you have read Ron C's series of article on the subject? Some of you seem to have a much different notion of how breakpoint targeting is supposed to be done that what Ron advocates.

see tips 17,18,19

I'm still in the process of mastering Ron's techniques, but I am absolutely convinced breakpoint targeting is a useful and practical technique to use on ANY lane condition.
