Do balance holes promote ball cracking?
« on: August 19, 2007, 04:17:41 AM »
One of my all time favorite balls is toast. I went downstairs to tinker with my arsenal and my Nuline Gauntlet cracked sitting on the ball rack. My basement is probably about 76 deg all summer. The ball cracked 5" from the ring to the balance hole. Makes me think more and more about CG and balance holes. I wondering if it is good idea to try to avoid balance holes due to increase chances of the ball cracking. Another yard ornament!

It's not the temperature that should be your first concern, it's the humidity that is the catalyst for a lot of cracking.  Some balls have cores or core fillers that suck up that moisture causing swelling and then cracking.

Cool, I've never heard of that!
Good to know.

Was the balance hole beveled?  Any unbeveled hole increases the potential for cracking.  --  JohnP

It was beveled. I do have a de-humifier in the basement so it should not be that damp but that is a good theory on the moisture.
