Lane conditions
« on: August 14, 2022, 03:57:17 AM »
The league I'm on has 21 units of oil, 41 ft in length. Is that considered light oil? I'm using an old 14# Tribal but think I need a lighter ball.  Planning on getting a 13# Hyroad but it's recommended for medium oil.  Sure was a lot easier getting a ball back in the 60s, had to have your name engraved to find it.

I don't know about house shots since I never bothered to ask about volume/ratios, but for the sport shots I bowl on that is a very light volume. House shots usually have a pretty decent puddle in the middle, so 21 units does sound pretty light for total volume.

I realize you said units of oil, not mL. I don't know if they're the same or not. Maybe some houses use the terms interchangeably? 21 mL is definitely light.

Thanks Geoff, it's a typical house shot, anything will work, need a lighter ball anyhow until I get back in shape.  Can't hurt anything except my bank account.

If my house pattern used 21 units I'd never get past my Rhino.  Ours has 27 units.

I'm also assuming the term unit is the same as ml.

FWIW I looked at the book at the counter and apparently the house shot (where my sport shot league is) is 41 feet and uses 15.5 mL of oil. I've bowled on the house shot a few times and it feels pretty medium, although 15.5 sounds very light. It's possible that mL and units of oil might not be the same, even if they're used interchangeably.

Hi SrKegler -  A few questions.  Is the lane surface wood or synthetic?  What are you averaging?  Are you a right handed or left handed bowler.  Ball surface is significant.  What balls do you have in your arsenal and what weight?  Coach Denny Gold ABE

Our senior league just switched to High Street, 44ft pattern, total oil volume is 21.1mL.

Another pattern used in other leagues is Wall Street, 40ft long, total oil volume of 19.7mL.  They had used this pattern for a couple of weeks for the seniors and they were not happy with it, complaints that the lanes hooked too much abounded.  With the seniors, I am sure it was the shorter length, not the volume, that was the main cause.  I think in the past, most of the senior league patterns were 43-44 ft.

I can't really comment on whether units and mL are the same or not.

Also, since I have just recently started bowling again, I could not compare the two patterns, my timing and control/accuracy were so far off, all low scores were on me, not the lane patterns.

Hi - Thank you for your question and comments.  For me or other coaches we need additional  information.  Key points - 1. What balls do you have in your arsenal?  2. What average do you currently carry and what was your highest average, in the past 10 years?  3. May not be possible but do you know the Dual Angle layout for each ball.   If not, provide the pin location vs finger holes location. Example - Assuming you are a right handed bowler -  Pin is above the finger holes by 2 inches and center of the fingers grip.  Pin is parallel to the finger holes and 4 inches right.  Pin is below the finger holes, 2 inches down and right.  Thank you and more to come - Coach Denny, Gold Level ABE

You should also look at the ratio.  A typical house shot is approx. 41' with 19 mils at about a 7:1 ratio so the outsides will hook.  Use 19 mils at 41' with a 2:1 ratio and it's going to play very different.

House shots around here are usually 25-28ml and there's still tons of hook. Usually 40-44ft as well. I wouldn't call under 20 a typical house shot.
