Lane Courtesy-Am I Over-sensitive
« on: April 14, 2014, 11:54:33 AM »
While bowling the state tournament yesterday, one guy on the adjoining lane would bowl his first ball, and then stand on the back of the lane, waiting for his ball to return and for me to bowl. I never asked him to step off the lane, but I waited for him to go ahead and bowl his second ball before bowling. His teammates never said anything to him, although I know several of them and they know better.

Also, some people in league will step up to the lane beside you, waiting for you to bowl, and practice their armswing while waiting. My peripheral vision is probably better than many, and I can see this motion beside me. It is distracting. I normally step off the lane and allow the person to bowl.

How would you handle each of these situations.

Bowling courtesy is becoming less courteous.

You handled it correctly, you could have a conversation with that person to let them know it bothers you. Most people would respect your request.

I knew a guy who does it to distract bowlers. I used to sometimes let him finish before I throw my first ball. But, I've gone up to bowl even knowing he's up to some things. Once I was aware of his little games, he didn't bother me much.

I've played his game too and he didn't like. I did exactly what he does, rub my shoe on the approach and swing his arm. Or, he'll pick up a ball and drop it on the rack in the middle of your approach. (i never done that) He's a good person to practice your focus/mental game with. You acknowledge his behavior, zone him out, and do well he loses.

Oh, there was a night when he was being really obvious and he got to my teammate. I had to step in.......when returned after throwing a real good shot, I told him that his foot almost or did cross the foul line... he pulled a lot of his shots since then..

Yea, but I wanted to tell the guy, please step your ignorant arse off of the lane so that I can bowl.

I catch stuff out of my peripherals quite often as well, lol then I concentrate more on trying to avoid looking than what I'm aiming at.  I'm more used to 2 lane courtesy, so I generally give it, most people I bowl with do even if it's not a league/tournament rule, but if I'm only getting one lane or if people are standing up on the approach waiting, I'll take extra time toweling the ball off, examine something on my shoe, etc., until they go ahead and go.  I've made a lot of progress with just getting up there and going, because being easily distracted feels like a mental game weakness.  But honestly, if something out of the corner of your eye breaks your concentration, sometimes it's tough for even the best bowlers on the planet to refocus without stepping off or resetting.  Maybe a little over sensitive, but it doesn't sound excessive to me.

i was so pissed about a month ago.  My friend had a shot to win an event.  He needed a double to win our singles association tournament.  He throws the first one, he gets up to throw the second one and some drunk hack walks right up on him.  He makes a meh shot and leaves a half ten.  The drunkard was throwing his last ball of a 140 game and had no idea.

I understand your complaint and to each their own.  A person standing on the approach after there shot is just rude.  However,  when I was young and learning to bowl competitively I was taught to keep the same pre-shot routine.  I towel my ball a couple of times.  Slide my left foot back and forth twice on the back edge of the approach as I put my fingers it,  Step up and inside thumb.  And a second or so after my ball is at starting point I begin my approach.

The longer you stand on the approach the more negative things can happen.  I see bowlers everyday that flex there knee's 2 or 3 times,  insert and remove thumb,  twist hand a couple times.  Best advice I can give,  get to your starting position as as CONSISTENTLY QUICK as you can.

I however would've asked the guy to step off the approach,  mainly for the simple fact that if he did it at some tournaments he would get cussed out.

I also give 2 lanes, although many players 2 lanes over do not look left or right.

You are not over-sensitive. Practicing your armswing on the approach is really discourteous. A bowler should not be on the approach when a player on an adjacent lane is there. You should not be reaching for your ball (even if you are off the approach) when a player is on the approach. You could drop the ball and really cause a problem.

I never give two lanes in league. It takes too long for a league to finish when people do that. In PBA regionals, they do the full pair, but with everyone doing it, it doesn't slow down the pace like it does in league.

This.  I'm one of the top bowlers in my league and I can't imagine not being able to bowl w/only 1 lane.  If it's a regional or big bucks, ok.........but league?  Really?

We had 2 guys on our team last season always giving 2 lanes (hell, one practically giving A PAIR courtesy) and we were the last ones done every. single. week.  I'm not in any rush by any means but being last every night is quite a bit "much".  We started competition at 6:42 and were out the door roughly 4 hours later at 10:30 - 10:45.

Again, all of this in WEDNESDAY NIGHT LEAGUE on a WIDE OPEN THS.

4 hours to bowl league?  Did you take a dinner break in the middle of the second game and go out for cheeseburgers?  I would have lasted exactly two weeks on that team.

Yeah I can understand that.  In regular house shot handicap leagues, I'll give one lane unless someone is particularly distracting or I know someone else on the next pair that also likes to give 2 lanes, but I bowl in a couple scratch leagues, one of which has a rule requiring 2 lane courtesy.  The other doesn't, but there is usually a lot of side action going on, but everybody in those leagues pay a lot of attention.  They're up there when it's their turn, and they just get to business, none of the egotistical taking extra time just because they think they can get away with it type stuff.  I can't say I honestly prefer one over the other though . . as long as people aren't distracting or acting a fool, either one works.
