Title: League Struggles...
Post by: Strapper_Squared on February 11, 2016, 09:51:49 PM
Bowling on a standard THS.  Medium oil, lots of dry outside, but enough oil down the middle that you can move in and find enough to get the ball down the lane.
This season I have been around 16.5 mph at the pins and close to 425 rpms.

Over the past two weeks, I have lost any and all carry.  Last week shot 640, left 10 ten pins and a hand full of others.  This week, shoot 630 with one open.  Had a decent look playing up the boards during game 1.  As the lanes dried a bit and forced me in, I lost everything.  Clean the last two games, struck every time on the left lane, but didn't throw a double.  8 ten pins and 3 seven pins.  Threw two different balls on lines between 14 at the arrows to as deep as 23 at the arrows.  Knew I should have tried to cross over!

The lane was sending me a clear message, I just couldn't translate it into the appropriate line/roll.

Ever get stuck in the "cant carry to save your a@@" funk?

On a side note, I've gotten in a lot of good work on the spare game.

It happens. As long as you make your spares and stay out of trouble you'll find it again. You won't kill your average over a few weeks of no carry unless you're trying to hold 240+.

Sometimes I notice I'll over analyze in a situation like that

I enjoy league, but maintaining focus becomes a problem. You pretty much know where to play every week (barring an oil machine malfunction) in most houses, so your brain may "turn off" at times.

I'm going through a similar funk, and I keep telling myself to focus better. I don't. My fear is that could impact my tournament performance, but it probably doesn't....that's what practice sessions are for.

Enjoy your friends during league, and don't get too low or too high (emotionally) on the THS.

i have the same problems. when it happens i just try to maintain my physical game and not worry about how many 9 counts i get. my house shot leagues to me are my fun leagues so as long as im throwing good shots im happy. last night i missed the pocket twice and shot 660. i told my friend i felt like phil hellmuth out there if he was a bowler. if i carried every time i threw a good shot id average 260.

I feel your pain as well.  Recently keeping track of scores via app mainly since I told my 2 high school kids that it feels like they strke more than I do, but I score more just because I fill frames.  Well, I'm filling frames 93.3% with a 54.9% strike rate.  My boys strike rate is even with me, but my girl is 10% lower.  My clean frames is 7-10% better than theirs though.  Makes me focus on spares more knowing that I have to show my kids what I did.

Strikes are another story in that bouncing the dry boards scatters the pins like crazy, but I still leave single pins and the get the occasional big ugly (taking our 1-2-5-8 on strike ball anyone?).  Keeping in the oil leads to lots of flat 10, ring 10 combos.  Tried different hand positions, speed changes, different balls without success makes a THS feel hard and wondering why I can't figure it out. Grinding out isn't much fun when there are multiple honor scores around you.

I think I've stumbled on a little recently in that all this pressure to strike has lead to squeezing and muscling my swing.  I'm going to try going for 80% effort to smooth things out.  Freeing up the swing is always a good thing anyway.

I find myself often with too much ball in my hands on house conditions.  Usually I can start with my strong asyms and just plow through the soup inside to decent success, but making that switch down to my mid range stuff is always a struggle because my ball is still hitting hard, just not quite right.
When it comes to leaving too many corners on a wall, it is usually the result of throwing a ball that just covers too many boards and too much angle where I should be straightening out my angles with something a little smoother.

Pile another week on... Struggles are turning into a slump!

Guess I can't expect too much, I bowl 3 games a week right now.
