Title: League using PBA Patterns
Post by: trash heap on July 06, 2011, 01:27:16 AM
Can I still create a league that uses PBA Patterns or Sport Patterns and NOT be a SPORT LEAGUE?

I want to setup  a league this fall using 4 patterns. (USBC Masters, Earl Anthony, Dick Weber, and U.S Open). I can't officially make it a Sport League. The center we bowl at isn't regestered. I know there some guys in my area looking for challenge. Just want it to be sanctioned. Even though we won't get SPORT AWARDS it still would be nice for someone to receive an award if they shoot a 300 game or 800 series.

Was looking at USBC sight and it states:

Effective November 1, 2010, USBC no longer has the right to offer Sport Bowling leagues that use PBA patterns or trademarks.

As a Sport Bowling alternative to PBA Experience leagues, USBC will offer Team USA Experience leagues. Rather than the PBA patterns, the Team USA Experience leagues feature the 12 World Tenpin Bowling Association, Sport compliant patterns Team USA competes on internationally.

Yes you can.  You just will not sanction it as a sport bowling league, and your bowlers will not have to pay the extra sport sanctioning.   You will just sanction it as a regular league and use whatever oil patterns you would like to.

I currently bowl in a couple of leagues that do the same thing you would like to do.   If an award score is shot, the bowler just gets the regular award score for that game.

You will just call your league "Monday Night Men's Challenge",  "Tuesday Night Men's Match Point"....etc.   You just can't call it a PBA league, or a sport league in the leagues title.

The only problem arises when you have bowlers who only bowl in these leagues.  In my area we have a few bowlers who only bowl in these "challenge" leagues so they can get a lower average for handicap tournaments. Since they are not sanctioned sport, this league becomes their established average without having a sport re-rate.   It becomes "legal" sandbagging.   This is now up to the industry and tournament directors to police.

Is it okay to use the patterns? Is there a license fee to use the PBA Oil Patterns? Is the PBA going to have a problem if I state the league uses the Earl Anthony Pattern?

I am not going to call it PBA or a SPORT League. Came up with a name "King of the Hill". Person who has the highest series the current week ("The King") gets to choose the oil pattern that will be used the following week. (One condition to this choice, an oil pattern cannot be used more than 2 weeks in a row).

There is only a licensing fee if you want to buy the patterns and use them in a sport sanctioned league.   A bowling league can use any oil pattern they chose to.   You just can't advertise 'PBA" league and not pay for the patterns/licensing.

The licensing fees are to use the PBA name, and its brand recognition.

The PBA patterns change every year.  Thus to keep up with the current patterns you have to buy them for your league.   How much the patterns change is a matter of opinion, but they do to a point.

Pre-published and established patterns  that the PBA used in the last few years, that can be found on the internet are more than good enough.   Most of the Kegel patterns are the same as the PBA patterns, just a different name.  Kegel established the animal patterns when they were in charge of the lane oiling procedures on the PBA tour in late 90's to mid 2000's.

If your that worried about it,  change the distance of the pattern a foot on all of them or make a small ratio in oil change.

Your allowed to put whatever you want on the lane, as long as it is legal and call it your "league condition".   It's just that people today want a THS, thus that is the standard for oiling lanes.

The PBA does offer licensing to leagues on a direct basis.  I have no idea what the cost would be.  As a practical matter, between the Kegel Sport Patterns and The Team USA patterns you should find enough challenge in those without worrying about using the PBA's animal patterns.

As far as your house not Sport sanctioning;  noy much involved as long as your house or association has the equipment to run the tapes.

Don't use the name Dick Weber, Earl Anthony etc.      Just use the patterns.   Call them 1 2 3 and 4.

Thanks for replies and input everyone. Really appreciate your time to answer.  This league is going to be a trial run in my area. There has never been an official league in my association with a tough pattern. When I got it all down, with rules, and pay outs, I would like to post it on this site for final review. Make sure I covered all the odds and ends.

Just over visiting on PBA's site. Apparently a Bowling Center can obtain the PBA Oil Patterns for a small fee of $300. Is this whole thing really about money? Or are these organizations not willing to get along with each other!

Sandbaggers???

I bowl in a little center out here Western PA. The owner is gracious enough to keep the place running, its very clean, and he is willing to do anything. I am not going ask him to put up $300 for PBA shots and I also will not ask  him to put the money into a Lane Monitor System (Not sure what that cost is) for a Sport League.

So what are we suppose to do? Be stuck with an easy shot because that is today's standard? What a joke? It's not my problem the USBC is too stupid to fix their rules and regulations for leagues that put out a tougher condition than THS.

Instead of moving to Texas, Instead of building a new center, Instead of creating all this garbage that I as a USBC card member will never see...maybe the USBC should of thought what they could have done for us instead of what they thought was best for them.

Here is an idea....all that exesss money that got wasted down Texas, should have went into temporary loans. This is for all those small centers out there. USBC's buys all the require lane monitoring equipment upfront and have the bowling centers pay it back over a 2 or 3 year span with little interest. Maybe you can't get every center immediately, but you get as many as you can each year. This is one of the biggest issues in the SPORT of bowling. Imagine if every center had the equipment to provide read outs on the lanes. Before each league starts....USBC would require a lane snapshot. As time goes on...the goal would be all centers with USBC sanction leagues would have this equipment.

Wouldn't that be something?

From what I seen on this site and others....PBA Experience was getting some steam and then ruined. By who?

So now my little 12 week league with a PBA shot is considered a problem (lucky if I get 10 bowlers). We are a bunch of cheaters trying to exploit the system and something should be done; because we are the ones ruining the SPORT. Stop pointing fingers at me and look a little higher .

I feel your pain.  This feels like a money grab by the PBA. For the nominal amount of money you'd think they'd be interested in the betterment of the sport.

trash heap, I'm not saying that your league is full of sandbaggers but there certainly is a chance that an unethical bowler could bowl in such a league and without throwing off establish a lower than normal average that could be used in handicap tournaments. If the league was sanctioned as a sport league that couldn't happen, but the way you describe it, it could.

Trash Heap- Your efforts to build any league is commendable.  Your type of person is good for the overall

promotion of bowling.  The tournament directors can find a way to deal with people who use this for their only

league to establish more handicap.  In Las Vegas (arguably the tournament capital of the United States), we have

seen this type of problem and it is handleable.  Good luck.

Okay since I can't use the "official' Pattern Names, I came up with my own:

Dead Eye (Cheetah)

Ninja (Chameleon)

Swamp (Shark)

Mutant (Scorpion)
Cobra (Viper)
Black Ice (Flat oil pattern, US Open)

Had to change some of the descriptions, but the names fit pretty good.

I have named this league "King of the Hill!" (It's good to be the king!)

Handicap set at 100% of 220.

4 points total can be earned each week. 1 point for each game and 1 point for series (Handicap Scores).

Cost to Bowl: $12.00 ($7.50 lineage, 4.50 prize fund)

New concept for league. Called it "KING": Bowler who throws high scratch series for week will be declared "KING". "THE KING" gets to chose next week's oil pattern to be used.

There will be a League a Champion (Bowler with most points) and also "King of the League" (Bowler with most weekly "KING" titles)

Here is the Payout (number of bowlers in parenthesis):

King of League: $66.00(6),  $82.00(8), $102.00(10), $122.00(12)

League Champion: $116.00(6), $140.00(8), $160.00(10), $180.00(12)

2nd Place: $58.00(6), $70.00(8), $80.00(10), $90.00(12)

3rd Place: $22.00(6), $30.00(8), $34.50(10), $38.00(12)

4th Place: $18.00(6), $26.00(8), $31.00(10), $34.00(12)

5th Place: $14.00(6), $22.00(8), $27.50(10), $31.00(12)

6th Place: $10.00(6), $18.00(8), $24.00(10), $28.00(12)

7th Place: N/A(6), $14.00(8), $20.50(10), $25.00(12)

8th Place: N/A(6), $10.00(8), $17.00(10), $22.00(12)

9th Place: N/A(6), N/A(8), $13.50(10), $19.00(12)

10th Place: N/A(6), N/A(8), $10.00(10), $16.00(12)

11th Place: N/A(6), N/A(8), N/A(10), $13.00(12)

12th Place: N/A(6), N/A(8), N/A(10), $10.00(12)

High Handicap Series: $10.00

High Scratch Game: $10.00

Total Prize Money: $324.00(6), $432.00(8), $540.00(10), $648.00(12)

If anyone has suggestions or ideas please respond. This is a first for me in setting up a league.

Thanks,

Click "edit reply". Click on the image you copied into your text.  An outline box should show up.  Like a table, you should be able to grab the edges and corners and re size it.  Use the "preview" tab/pane at the bottom of your typing field (right above the click box for your signature) to see if it's right before resubmitting.
