Leather Shammy

Looking for updates, durability, cleaning frequency... I love mine and it seems to hold up, but I can't believe it never needs cleaning. I've cleaned mine once with warm water and mild soap... It might be my imagination, but seems to be a "bit" less effective, although still working fairly well....

Have you tried raising the nap with your shoe brush or a stiff short bristled brush?

Yep according to these instructions your supposed to use a soft brush on it.

Shammy Pad Cleaning Instructions

 
   The Storm Shammy Pad needs cleaning after some use
      The proper procedure will make the pad last longer
         Remember the Shammy Pad is made of leather

1. Wet the pad with warm water.
2. Use a soft bristle brush and gently rub the pad using a
    mild dish soap to exfoliate the surface of the pad.
3. Rinse the pad with warm water to remove the soap.
4. Ring the pad out and let it air dry before putting it
    back in your bag.

Master Industries makes a shammy pad very similar to the Storm pad. See www.bowlwithmaster.com. If you go to their website and click "video vault," you will see a Master representative cleaning the pad in the exact manner reflected in Aloarjr810's post.

I have cleaned the Master pad with warm water, dish soap, and a soft nylon brush. The pad picked up a lot of dirt, etc. and did not go back to the original gray after a cleaning, but it worked alright.

They do; they bought them a couple of years ago. It's why Master products are now approved for use during PBA tournaments.

Pete, The Storm and the Master shammies are probably the exact same product.  I think almost every manufacturer who markets accessories has one now. I just bought a nice one from Buddies, under their brand. I doubt if any one of these is truly different from any other.

Thanks for the replies... Jeff, that Buddies is definitely a can't miss price. I've been waiting to grab one on my next Buddies order. I'll add the brush step, wasn't doing that. Just watched the video also, thanks to all.

Jeff, thanks for the notes. Believe it or not, I have used both pads. I first bought a Masters shammy which I lost at the lanes (or somebody swiped it!!!). I then purchased a Storm pad which I am using. They are identical. If I lose the Storm pad, I am going back to micro-fiber towels.
 
When I cleaned the Masters shammy,  I thought that the pad seemed to lose some of its flexibility, although it worked fine. I have not yet cleaned the Storm pad.

Pete,

I also "lost"  a Master shammy (Chamois, actually)). Just tried Buddies leather pad. It was so tacky, I had to hold the ball firmly and it would move the ball it was that tacky. It still didn't do any more than my micro-fiber towel, though.
I think you need to see heavier oil than I do for it to make a difference. Since our lanes are so dry I can throw my plastic down the 4th arrow and watch it take out the 7 pin, nothing comes back with any significant oil on it.

I first tried a plain shammy/Chamois (true leather) that I had for drying cars. It worked just as well, as I had first surmised. If anyone thinks the leather they sell is better at absorbing oil, who am I to say it doesn't.

Interesting to see comments that a micro fiber towel works as well as the Chamois. I've been impressed with the difference, at least initially. At least leather compared to a dry micro fiber cloth. Not a huge difference, but every bit helps... It will be interesting to see long term....

But only with lower/low amounts of oil. I have not tried it with a flood or heavy oil and no where I bowl or practice has such conditions. Still looking, though.

Being a college bowler, a shammy is super effective! I definitely noticed a huge difference in comparison to a micro fiber towel.

I haven't noticed a huge difference. Easier to use a microfiber with my Pitch Black still as the Shammy doesn't slide over the surface easily

FYI:
Here's a article by Ron Hickland where he compares Cotton towels, Leather and Microfiber towels.

Not all towels are created equal

Basically it says,
  • Cotton towels are a waste of time.
  • Leather towels/Pads are good at removing oil, but load up fast with dirt.
  • Microfiber removes oil and doesn't load up as fast with dirt because theres more space between the fibers for the dirt to go.


Note:
If your holding the towel in one hand and spinning the ball on it. That's the bowler's version of a gunfighter twirling the gun on his finger. It's all for show, That's not effectively cleaning the ball.

The tackiness of the leather is what makes it effective, That's why you wipe the ball with it.

Even with a microfiber towel, you should wipe the oil off and not depend on spinning the ball in the palm of your hand to do the oil removal properly.
