Title: Like Grandpappy
Post by: AlonzoHarris on October 19, 2017, 11:24:45 PM
Ever have the desire to really reduce and simplify your ball choice like "back in the day"? I don't mean only Urethane, unless that's your thing Jesper Svennson but not have 6+ balls.

It also hit me hard at league tonight, I just don't think the atmosphere is the same as it was back in the 60's-80's. Mind you I'm 26 and speculating here.

If you like drilling balls and have the funds to do so, have at it. The avg league bowler prob doesn’t NEED more than 4. I’m a firm believer in the better you get, the less balls you need.

I take a 3 ball roller to league.  One "straight" ball and two "crooked" ones...

If I can't find a line to the pocket on THS it's probably the bowler's fault rather than anything else.

finding the pocket is easy and only requires a couple balls. carrying on the other hand is my problem and why i bring 5 balls to league. maybe its a lefty thing but i have more than several nights a year that ill go through everything i bring and shoot 630 and miss the pocket 4 times all night. but once you find the matchup you should only need to bring a triple bag and strike away

One of our centers lets kids do the oiler and it can go from super dry to a puddle from 5-5. I want to keep to very few balls for THS and a couple that lend to tournament play, but we get some wonky sh*t there. I still only take a 3 ball roller that includes a urethane as I use it for spares.

On THS I like to have 3 ball motions available, depending on what I'm seeing:

1. Flip
2. Control solid with some bite up front
3. Weak pearl that goes long and arcs slowly

Right now the Kinetic Emerald, IQ Tour, and Tundra fill these slots.  Will there be a night this season where I may want something else in my hand?  Sure, but I would bet it won't be often.

Im sorry, I cant bring 5 balls to bowl 3 games of league. I bring two balls, whatever I feel like and a spare ball. I may just start bringing 1 ball. I have a team mate, mind you we have been bowling in this league for 10 years, we know 99% of the time what we are facing. Yet, he deems it necessary to show up with 6 balls.

When I started the good bowlers carried a double tote to league.  Now the good bowlers roll a triple tote.  That hasn't changed that much.  What has changed is the guys that used to average 195 used to carry a double tote are now the guys that average 215 and roll 2 triple rollers in thinking the ball is what is going to get them to 230.

I'm not getting any younger and don't like lugging extra balls into league that never get used, but I don't care how many the other guys bring.  Like northface28, most nights I actually use one reactive ball and the spare ball.  It's a security blanket to have the extra ball just in case...

Personally, I wish my opponent would bring in 6 balls and use them all, because that is usually good for me.  ;)

If I can't get it done with 2 or 3 balls, I'm not likely getting it done with 4 or more. I do own a ton of balls, but I'm not dragging a bunch to league. I also keep balls in my PSO's shop since it is at the house where I bowl most. I just take what I plan to use to the lanes and try to avoid going in there to get more.

Meanwhile, my PSO will drag out 7-9 balls and throw many of them in practice. He generally averages in the 225-240 range. It works for him. He always asks me why I'm not going to such and such ball. Gets "mad" sometimes when I leave a certain ball at home. In the end, it's just league. I'm taking it serious enough, but I'm also there for the fun of it. I don't need to throw 5+ balls in practice either. I know what they should do.

Dafuq?  Smack that proprietor upside the head.  Still totally agree 3 balls for league tops except maybe on the first night if haven't bowled that league before.

The proprietor is a cheap a$$ bastard. They also are the ones that do the pin setter maintenance, and in return they break too much.

I'll take 5 to one place, if the league is spread out over the whole house. Low end plays completely different than the high end. Otherwise, 3, and that includes my urethane.

I take 5 to every league. Why? One is my spare ball and it's in a single ball tote(and I'm too lazy to change it out). The other four go because I have a four ball roller, I make sure the one I need for that league is in the bag, the others? See my pitiful excuse about my spare ball.  ;D

I will take two and a spare ball.  Yes it is about carry but when I am carrying anything in my bag works pretty well.  When I am struggling I could drill out every thing in the pro shop and not carry.

Got tired of lugging around 6-8 balls a long time ago. I carry a two ball bag and a spare ball most of the time.

No, I don’t always have that perfect matchup, but I didn’t many times even when I was carrying that many.

A recreational THS league in one house should have NO need for 6-8 ball arsenals.

Bowl in 2 leagues in 2 different houses.
I bring 6, admit to being a ball junkie, love trying new balls.
House 1 I have been bowling for years and the shot is fairly consistent and I admit I have a couple balls in the bags that never see the lanes.
House 2 I just started this season and the lane conditions have been different every week and I still don't know what balls to bring. Honestly wish I never suggested to my team to move to this house as it is a dump but other bowlers have raved about it for years. Think they (owners) just cater to the one league nite which is why they all love it and we bowl on a different nite. The owners are idiots when it comes to running a business IMHO as its dirty and the AC doesnt work. Thankfully its now cool here in CT but they could do a lot more to make the place cleaner. One positive is the owners stupidity allows the bartenders to over pour and comp which is great after bowling in the bar.

So yeah, about this...Last night was a night I wound up using my Dare Devil Trick, which was only with me because of a gouge in the thumbhole that I needed my PSO to fix.  The Kinetic Emerald was money on the same pair last week but this week was not getting to the hole consistently.  The IQ was giving me a better look but I kept ringing 7's - the ball wasn't transitioning quick enough.  After opening up with a 204 with a combination of the Kinetic Emerald and IQ Tour and going X then leaving 3 straight 10 pins to start game 2, I switched to the Trick and went sheet for 258 and then shot 245 the last game.  Dammit - I'm now bringing another ball with me (for now) - I don't want to be that guy but if it's another useful tool, why not?
