do you lift with one finger more than the other?
« on: March 05, 2007, 11:44:40 AM »
i've noticed that my ring and middle finger both have calluses on the pads on
them but the callus on my ring finger is a little thicker. is this normal?
if someone lift more with their ring finger how would it affect my ball roll
in general terms? is this more a product of my release or is it the way my
ball fits. i actually have more away pitch on my ring finger distribute the
weight of the ball equally but wonder if it actually made it worse. it doesn't
hurt my fingers but i've noticed that my ring finger will burn after releasing
the ball while my middle finger never does.

i'd like opinions on this subject.

sound like the pitch on your ring may be a bit much. You will lift stronger with the finger with the more aggressive pitch, but also it will put the majority of the strain on it. Causing possibly a sore finger.

Well, based on what I've been told by a certified coach, a burning sensation on your fingertips is a good thing. That lets you know that you are getting lift on the ball.

There are a couple of possibilities.  If you use inserts, your ring finger insert might be slightly too tight.  That'd probably be my last guess.  More likely, you're hitting harder on release with the ring finger in order to create more revs.  When I want more turn on the ball, I put more pressure on my ring finger.  When I want to stay more behind the ball, the pressure is on my middle finger.  If you're constantly applying added pressure to the ring finger to get more lift and turn, then it's going get more wear and tear than your ring finger.

That being said, the pads of the fingers shouldn't be callused.  That indicates that you're hanging onto the ball too long during your release in an effort to "grip and rip" it.  If you have calluses at all, they should be just above the first finger joint.

I mostly see calluses on finger pads from the kids I coach who are trying to no-thumb the ball.  I'd suggest going back to your pro shop and showing him/her the calluses.  Ask about adjusting the pitches.  And then find a qualified coach who can work with you on getting a cleaner release that will eliminate the undue pressure on your finger pads.

I had the same thing at one time. I changed my pitches alittle and dropped my ring finger 2/16th's of inch.

Got rid of the callouses and dont feel any burn on the finger tips.

Lifting is a no-no, lifting is grabbing.  I say rotating is better.

Calluses could be wrong pitch, wrong span(most likely too long).

Bowlers often get their revs from the ring finger. Ive changed my inserts to oval on the middle and flat on the ring. That way im not lifting as much with the ring, and im getting a slightly higher track.

i dont have sarge easter but my ring finger is dropped so i dont put too much effort during the release. The other reason i dropped the ring finger is that i dont like the feeling of strechness when holding the ball, later on it produces some pain. i.e for the release i put more on my middle finger than my ring finger

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one

i should have been a little clearer abut my problem. i don't use inserts but i
do use vice grip tape instead. i don't have calluses per se but anyone who
bowls could look at my hand and know that i bowl with my right hand by looking
at the pads on my fingers. i do tend to hit the ball somewhat but not in a way
that i think is excessive where there is actual pain involved, only an occassional slight burn.
if it also helps i have 1/8th away on my middle finger and 3/8th's away on my ring finger.
one last thing, i can only flex the last joint on both fingers about 35
degrees so this is why i use away pitch or my fingers.

The burning on the ring finger is caused by the ring finger coming out of the ball rotating and probably lifting after the middle finger has exited.  If the burn is on the middle of the finger, you are simply creating additional sideroll.  The more it moves to the outside of the ring finger you are adding spin and reducing axis tilt.  The ring finger generally provides the impetus for the degree of angle of axis rotation one has -- i.e., someone with more ring will generally have more sideroll (45 degrees or more) and someone who lifts as well as rotates will get more "spin" (creating less upright axis tilt) leading people to believe that they have more revolutions, which they may or may not.

As long as the top of your hand isn't hurting, don't worry too much if the rotation works for you.  If you feel a burn on the top (or non-palm side) of the fingers, you have to find a way to stop holding on to the ball.  I have greatly exacerbated my arthritis by aggressively rolling the ball with my middle finger, even after feeling the burn and stretch on the top of the finger.
