Title: listening to music while bowling to concentrate
Post by: lilpossum1 on April 19, 2015, 01:35:25 PM
I can understand how some people do this to concentrate, but from a scientific standpoint, can this also hurt performance? The reason I ask is because performance is affected by music, which is why weightlifters listen to rock music. It helps the person get pumped up and perform better. Likewise, classical music can relax a person, causing the person to not do as much as quickly or effectively. Also, people naturally fall into rhythm with music. Looking at these points, is it possible that listening to music can throw off a bowlers timing, causing mistakes? I see bowlers messing up all the time when the music cuts off suddenly for the strike pots to be drawn while they are mid approach.

I can definitely see it helping or hurting depending on the person and the music they listen to with how it affects them.

If it helps a person, what happens when they're in a competition that doesn't allow it?

too many people don't have the focus to bowl without music.

I agree but also disagree. I would agree that there are too many people now that rely on music. But there's also the other side that includes myself and many others that listen to music to just enjoy it.

That's why I listen music on my headphones right before I bowl. That way the music is stuck in my head while I bowl. There's times when I'll bowl without any music but I find it more relaxing when the music is keeping myself mentally focus.

I personally don't like headphones on my ear when I'm moving , so for me I bring out my "shower" american idol skills out quietly, wen I need to keep a clear mental game.

i used to listen to music before tourney to calm my nerves. When shadow balls started I would turn the music off but leave the ear buds in so I didn't have to talk to the dicks

And then there are those who want nothing to do with anyone around them and yet call the others "dicks".

Why the dislike for everyone?  They're just people.  Sounds like solitary confinement would be ideal for you. ;)

LyalC52,

Thanks for clarifying then.

Sorry, I never bowled Southlake, not even once.  Your first remark kinda caught me strange though.  If I misinterpreted your remark then my apologies.

I try to have fun when I bowl.  I don't see eye-to-eye with everyone, but I still try to find something that I like about them before the night is up.  If you're in my area then look me up.  Maybe we can have a Coke or something.  You can leave your earbuds in :).

Along with what was said earlier on the topic, if someone becomes dependent on their music and then perhaps it's not allowed, for whatever reason,  can they "find their game" so to speak?  That would be the real downside from my view.

I do wear earbuds when mowing my lawn to make the job less tedious...  I have a feeling that I listen to different stuff than the younger generation, though (because I'm no longer young).

Bowling should be a social activity. Perhaps that's one of the reasons league bowling participation is declining. Too many iPhones, Androids, Laptops and mp3 players instead of learning a few social skills and meeting new people.

Totally agree with you, I dont listen to music while I´m bowling, it distracts me, but its a personal preference, to calm my nerves I rather go take a sit and talk to my teammates about anything, that way I get distracted and refocus for my next shot, otherwise im thinking of the last shot when it´s a bad one.

Plus I think another reason league bowling is declining is people that have and average of 170 when they really throw a 190+, that is just cheap IMO

The only people that bowl with headphones in their ear actually have weak mental games and are trying to find some other way to focus.  I also find its the idiot children fresh out of "yaba" leagues..that also kid the ball return, slap the keyboard, throw temper tantrums.

Its a sign of the times, bad attitudes, bad diets, bad sportsmanship, bad focus, etc.

Its what MILO SAID!

I LOVE listening to music when I bowl!! It pumps me up! and really gets me focused!
However, I can't, and have not yet figured out.....how to bowl with the earbuds in my ear. I just can't do it.

So I listen to music right up to the time that it's my turn. Then I bowl with the melodies floating in my head.

I think it messes with your awareness having things in your ears..

Whoa this strayed from the intended conversation lmao. Anyway, I totally understand how music can help benefit a bowler. I am not against people listening to music in the slightest. I enjoy dumping a little money in the jukebox every now and then. For me, listening to music and joking with my team helps me to focus when I get up to bowl again because I am not focusing on my bad shots

The only time i wear earphones is when I'm practicing by myself.  If anyone else is bowling with me, be it practice or league, the phones are in the bag.  To me its kind of rude if your are with other people and you got the earphones on.

I listen to all kind of music, doesn't throw me off anymore than usual. Can be a slow song or a fast one, doesn't make a difference. Well actually it may make me focus even more if the beat doesn't match my timing.

There is a singles/scratch league that doesn't seem bad to have earbuds in. But all the other leagues it seems rude to have them in. Generally I like people, bowling is social. Never like bowling with the people that "unplug" them selves from the social aspect of the game with ear buds/phones. Might as well get used to not having them in if you plan on doing tournaments.

I don't listen to music per say, but I do have a song, or part of a song that I repeat in my head.  It helps with my timing, and that is all that I using it for.
The outside noises do not bother me as much.

I use earbuds 100% of the time. What reason could a tournament use to make them illegal?
