Title: Looking for the best Drillers
Post by: psychodad on September 26, 2007, 06:21:20 AM
If you could have anyone in the U.S. drill your equipment who would it be. This includes laying out you ball so you have the best fit for your game. Is there anyone out there that is heads above everyone else. I know in my area if I go to three different pro shops I am going to get fitted three different ways. Is this normal, if so how am I suppose to know what is a proper fit for me. They can all feel good on my hand but how do I know which one is being done correctly. If you could travel anywhere who would you go to?  I know in coaching you have guys like John Jowdy, Fred Borden, Ron Clifton etc. Is there any ball drillers that are in an elite class like these coaches. I thought I would throw this out there and see what happens.

Already use the best K & K Bowling Services- Jeff Walsh and Sakae Wantanabe, these guy's do not miss on anything ever. I have had at least 600 balls drilled by just these two guy's alone, more like a 1000 plus for all K & K drillers.

They do not employ a bad driller and never will.

I am fortunate that he drills my stuff for me already, but if I ever were to move out of the state (again) I'd still come back to kingofthemill.

Mike Mineman drilled my favorite ball. Going to try Carl Hurd. Would like to try Rick Leong, Mike Austin.

Been to 4 different pro shops and gotten 4 different fits Mike was the only one that actually watched me throw a shot before drilling the ball.

Chris Moyer doesn't even drill balls yet...LOL!!!

He has just passed the ball work class I gave him. He is still only a B+ ball plugger but color matching will come with time. He is a very good ball finisher though. Tuesday starts the hand measuring and drilling class.  He has potential for sure....Beans

Right now I use Travis Johannsen in Trussville, Alabama. He use to work for McCorvey's Pro Shop as well as Brunswick. He currently works for Lightning Strikes. I was kicking around the idea to use Andy Shutt in Sioux Falls who works for Brunswick at nationals and has his own shop in Sioux Falls, but now that I am in Albert Lea don't know what I will do.

Thanks MC!  I appreciate the mention.  Didn't want to FIGJAM because JLS would have to berate me about my Texas size ego and all that....

Mike, may I call you mike??>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Don't worry too much about getting 4 different fittings from 4 different fitters.  They aren't always wrong, just different.  One thing I like to do, when I go to other pro shops, and if I know them a little bit, I get them to fit me and then date/sign the sheet.  Later on, I drill a ball with those specs and see how it works/feels.  Like I said not always wrong, just different.

Different bowlers have differing levels of difficulty being fitted.  I have used spans from 4 3/8 to 4 5/8.  Thumb pitch from 5/8 reverse to 3/8 forward.  Never a ding or blister on my thumb.

Pain is the worst thing, if it hurts, then it's probably not right.

Sure you can call me Mike, Mike. Thanks for the tips. Like you said they are just "different". Not causing pain, just different feel switching between balls.. I have family in OKC, next time I visit, may have to look you up.

If I could have anyone in the U.S. drill my "equipment", it'd be Scott Peterson. Oh wait...we're in "Misc. Bowling"...my bad.

After having Frankie May measure my specs in Reno, I'm finally comfortable for the first time in 5 years. Anyone can drill holes and finish them off, it's the proper measurements that matter as far as I'm concerned.

Ed Moore in Bowling Green Bowl in West Chicago                                 I got my last 4 balls drilled by him,and I have                                raised my average by an average of 10 to 15 pins
since. He is the only one who ever took the time to                            watch me roll a bowling ball.

No preference. Had tried stuff by a few of the listed bigger names also Mr Calhoun from Ebonite. He I would not recommend, due to my flexibility always spanned me too long. I have never found a grip that always feels comfortable. Probably more due to bad form and gripping. I would try a few of the guys on here but only if they measured me and watched me throw.
