"cranker, tweener, or stroker" who has the true advantage?
« on: September 03, 2012, 03:54:24 PM »
Hey ballreview family, for years the walter rays, the norm dukes, and the pdw's have been successful on tour playing straighter being stroker's/tweeners and have won consistently for decades, but now that its all about the power players with tons of revs and speed, who has the real edge as far as ball reaction, longevity, dominance and everything?

I think it depends on the conditions. There are times when revs and power will dominate, while others when finesse and feel are paramount.

Thank you guys for your responses guys and I understand that different conditions dictate certains, but if you had to use one style and make adjustments with that style, which one would a bowler overall benefit from more?

Then I would choose WRW's or Duke's style, as they have won being all three!

It has to be the bowler who can do more then one and be good at it. That is why the guys listed (PDW, WRW, Duke) all have the wins and longevity they do.

Power players along with other styles have come and gone over the years, these guys are the ones who adapt to what the lanes dictate and go from there.
…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

None.  They all have their place and as mentioned numerous times, depends on conditions.  No correct answer to your question.
Long Gone also posts the honest truth which is why i respect him. He posts these things knowing some may not like it.

It's depend on what PBA pattern they are using.Crankers do good on one but not the other. And the same goes with the Tweeners and strokers. Other factor that goes right along with this is what bowling balls they are using either pin high or below surface with polish or dull.Plus how they attack that pattern. The only advantage that any one have is the ability to score well and being constant.
I hate ten pins but love the game of bowling with just the right ball to take them out.

Accuracy wins out over power everytime. How many power players other than Roth have won as many titles? Not many but he was accurate for a power guy different times different conditions. The equipment makes up for any flaw in your game, back in the old days of rubber and plastic you had to be accurate and repeat shots that's how you scored. Now it's hook in a box without having to put your hand in it very much. I think all leagues need to move to some uniform sport shot to weed out those who are truly good bowlers and who are sandbaggers.

i dont think it's so much a style ...   but how much they can adjust their release..

guys on the top of my list are

Chris Barnes
Norm Duke
PDW
Mike Fagan
Wes Malott
Bill O'Neill
WRW jr

Now while some of the guys on this list may not be in the top 20 on the pba list for titles..

But they are probably the most versatile over a variety of lane conditions and can play the big hook or play straight up the gut...
