Give me some advice
« on: January 08, 2009, 06:57:32 AM »
I need some help on what to do, to try and get a leg up on the condition I'm now bowling on. It's 45 ft long with a heavy concentration from about the 6 board to 6 board. Lighter on the outside but definitely not a place to bump off. I bowl on the left side with few other lefties to help burn up the shot. The right side starts slick but opens up with the amount of guys playing there. The left side never breaks down. I'm still getting a very heavy oil ring on the ball at the end of the last game, whereas the righties are seeing nothing. Medium lane equipment won't even wrinkle so they're out. I have a Hammer Pain, Anger and a Perfect Rival. The Anger won't move at all the Perfect Rival tries but can't turn the corner and the Pain makes a small but less than powerful move. I realize I'm at disadvantage because I'm a down and in, low rev player but I've never bowled anywhere that my ball doesn't move at all. Guys that know me continue to come up and say "I would have bet the bank that ball was going to crush the pocket but it never turned the corner". It's very frustrating. I'm averaging 180 just grinding it out by not missing spares and trying to avoid splits. Last night missed one spare and had 3 splits, two that were pocket hits. I had no doubles or better.

If one of you has a suggestion other than quitting bowling at that house, I'd love to hear it. I've tried off the corner, in off the 6-7 board and up the 2nd arrow and nothing has worked. Any suggestions? Serious answers only, please!

without changing equipment, take your PAIN down to 500 abralon.  It should get the ball rolling sooner.

If you can get your hands on a heavy load particle ball it will probably help.  I bowl the same way as you and used to bowl at a house which flooded the lanes for tournaments.  The balls that worked best for me in these conditions were Columbia's Reaction Arc, Lanemasters' New Standard 2, and to some extent Visionary's Granite Gargolye.  All were prepped with a burgandy scotchbright before throwing on the heavy tournament shot.

I'm down and in too. Had this problem at our house for a few months. I had to move out to the 4 board with my weakest ball(navy reactive hammer). Ogre particle could help, or try sanding your least used ball.

I say move yourself to the middle of the lane and don't rely on your ball crossing boards. On heavier stuff since I am too a stroker I find that less boards crossed and house shot logic needs to get thrown out. Play up 13 or even farther in, you don't have to have your ball hook much, and for me I find by doing this its just about speed control and you normally have a very solid look. This of course if from my experiences on the right side and is just food for thought, good luck.

This is actually sort of one of the few things I can do well in bowling(at times).

I've had great luck on these shots with 3 approaches.

If there are backends I have had good success with heavy load particles....one being a Reaction Roll and the other WOULD be a Reaction ARC I have sitting around for sale.....CHEAP.

In addition I stand one foot closer to the line and take small steps with a low pushaway.  I also crowd my mark with my feet to point! Often standing on like 12 with my slide foot and throwing up 6 to 9 pointing to 10 or 11 at the breakpoint(this takes some getting used to) and feels uncomfortable when one first does it!.

One time early in my restart of bowling I "COULDNT" strike at all and I told my pro shop guy I needed a Heavy Load Particle ball.  He responded...."Can't" or "Won't"?  He then told me that instead of targeting the arrows target the dots.  Then he said if that doesn't work go towards the foul line 1/2 of the way from the dots.  I struck 19 times in a row immediately after targeting the dots.  I guess he nailed me....up to that moment I "Won't".

Note I can throw normal near 300 revs and about 15 mph is fast for me.  I can also throw 11 mph at near 250rpm.....

This slow speed and early visualization of the breakpoint(the dots or sooner) will ALMOST always find a breakpoint.  For me it has led to nice results in tourneys where they say NOONE will score today as we have 50 feet of oil to have games in the 250 plus range here and there.

Bring on the Au Jus!

REgards,

Luckylefty
PS note.....when I have found the backends to be sloppy that I have had to use the crowding my mark and looking at the dot techniques with strong reacting reactives....NOT particles as the reactives often give more backend movement if I can stay soft enough.

I'd also vote for:
a) sand down a ball and try a straight line down, look what happens. Pain or Anger - esp. when they are drilled to roll/hook early should be a good basis.
b) Try playing between 1st and 2nd board. Even if there is no true dry outside area, chances are good that you can still use the oil edge around 6th board as a guidance if you keep the angle low, and just let the ball do its job.
c) Slow feet, less speed and hand behind the ball plus a cupped wrist help, too.
d) Yes, a heavy load particle would be a good solution if you want to invest in equipment. But they become rare. Besides those mentioned, a BVP Mammoth from Brunswick or an AMB Centaur Particle (both recently discontunied, might still be found at pro shops) will also be good option. If these do not grab, hardly anything will...

Thanks everyone for some real good ideas and comments. The backends are virtually non-existant at this place so I'm going to try taking the surface on the Pain down to about 500. I'm also going to try crowding my my mark as Lucky Lefty has said to try. Playing around 12 or 13 has not worked for me. It's either crossing over or missing left because the ball wouldn't even twitch. Thanks again everyone!

another idea is to get a plastic ball and go practice.rarely do I see heavy oil anymore but it's nice to be ready if I ever encounter it.
I also like this vid,may help you if you haven't seen it

I would say use a pad to get some surface on the piece of equipment that carries the best and bowl a more direct line to the pocket. If you keep trying to get a "Turn the corner" type reaction, being a down and in bowler you are going to struggle. Much better to play a straighter line coming almost straight up the back of the ball. I know this as for the most part I am a down and in bowler and have in the past struggled on this same condition. So you may either have to play right of second arrow or a direct line from the gutter to the pocket.

I know this may seem alien and take some of the "enjoyment" out of things, but sometimes it is neccessary to bite the bullet and play a different line even though it may "Hurt" to do so.

You need to figure out what is more important to you, trying to bowl the way/line you like regardless of the conditions,or bowling the correct way so that you can still score when the conditions are not to your liking.

I know which option I would go with and believe me,it took me a fair while to come around to the sensible option.

I would have got away with it if it was not for those pesky kids (Behind my lane) and those blasted 10 pins.

Tuck your pinky.  Slows down your speed and gives more revs.  Seems like a small adjustment, but try it....it works for me and I'm a lefty as well.  It's the only way, besides playing straight up deep inside I have been able to compete on long, heavy patterns.
