Post by: SrKegler on May 28, 2005, 02:57:57 PM
Just talked to RonC, the gathering this year will be July 22-24, Creekside Lanes, Winston-Salem, NC

Who's coming.  Whole bunch of newbies out there that haven't had the pleasure of beating up on me.

Hey, we can make it my birthday celebration!  I'll be turning another year on the 21st.

What will be involved beyond the requisite time on the lanes?

I'll be teaching summer school, but if I can get a sub for the 22nd and 25th, I'll be there.  I had a blast the last 2 years.  Yes, I'd even like to see you again SrKegler

Pin-Nut, I'm sure there will be the traditional dinner and trip to Krispy Kream.

I have to work nights, but I can be around in the afternoon.  Maybe I'll burn some vacation if the date becomes firm.  Maybe I'll even be in a house by then.

Hammertime, Ron Clifton (Magic Carpet) has a "gathering" once a year for ball review members.  During the weekend he tapes your delivery and recommends small changes to improve your game.

Normally we pay $1 or $2 a game for lineage, make a trip to Crispy Creme, have a supper together, and try to stay off the police blotter.

Basically it's just a lot of fun meeting and bowling with people you talk to here on the website.

On Sunday he will usually put out a couple of tough shots, US Open, ABC tournament, etc.  Bowl 2 games on each pattern, high score usually gets a T-shirt autographed by everyone that attended.

Sure hope you can stop by at least, bring the folks along even if its just for a few minutes.

Ron is always happy to work with YABA bowlers to help them with their game.

Best part is its free coaching from one of the best in the business.

Doesn't matter.  Bear in mind there is no money involved, everything is simply to have some fun.  Scores really don't matter other than bragging rights.

A little info about the house.  Brunswick lanes, pro-anvil I believe, with the ray charles downlane markers.  Sweetspot for the THS is 10 board at 40'.

We can probably talk Ron into putting out this years ABC shot and maybe the US open or one of the PBA shots.  Might have to start another post to see what everyone wants.  Afterall, its your gathering, Ron wants to make it as memorable as possible.

Suggestions anyone.

I'm really interested in making the trip, if for nothing else, so that some of the people on BR will actually see THE Big Willy Style (I'm referring to the back-up ball I throw)! Anyway, need to get some info from you guys...message me with hotels, times, address, and most importantly...if you'll actually let a back-up bowler around real bowlers!!!

Hope to see some of ya in a couple months...

Oh, I'm there for the fun, too....Couldn't bowl for money if my life depended on it!!  Just love to show off my balls!

Wouldn't mind any non-THS shot, but the ABC, US Open or something where you have to play way outside would be nice....

My email address if you need more info:

The hotel I suggest is Extended Stay America. It is clean and cheap!
Use the Winston Salem / Hanes Mall location.
You can find it on www.extendedstayamerica.com for a map. It just one exit from the bowling center.

I think this is about the 3rd or 4th year I have done this.
People have come from as far away as Ca. and Wa.

We have a good time, bowl a LOT (games are only $1.50)
We usually have a bragging rights tournament and the winner gets a T-shirt signed by all.
This is not a Ron Clifton 3 day bowling clinic but I am always willing to help the attendees out when they ask…for free of course.

I hope to see lots of you there…Even you lurkers out there that enjoy reading the post but never post anything.

OK guys, now we have another little problem.  Lane 1 has donated a H20 ball, hat, & shirt to be given out during this years BR gathering.

I ordered a 15# ball, medium shirt.

Give me some ideas on how to give them away that is fair to everyone.

I think we should just give it to the one who showed the most dedication by moving closest to Ron.

Maybe award the ball to the highest (handicap) score of whatever tournament format we come up with, and make the hat and shirt "door prizes".  Maybe have a small raffle to help Ron pay for some expenses?  I don't know how much trouble it would be to set up, but a skills competition might be fun also.  I want a shot at the 45 pin rack.  I want to see SrK leave one of his famous taps on that!

Thanks to Darold for arranging the prizes and Lane #1 for their generosity!

I'm going to be in NC the weekend of the get together, but I don't know yet if my schedule will allow me to attend.  I have a family reunion to attend on the Saturday, so if I can attend it will be on Sunday.  On the ball to be given away, combine luck and skill.  Put everyone's name in a hat (or sell chances and put them in the hat) and draw a name.  The lucky bowler then has one ball to throw a strike for the win.  If he doesn't win, his name goes back in the hat and another name is pulled for the chance to strike and win.  --  JohnP

Title: Re: Magic Carpet Gathering
Post by: SrKegler on June 01, 2005, 11:53:52 AM
Lot of good ideas coming out.  The only one I didn't like was the raffle.  I don't really want to start getting money involved in the gatherings.

Not to try and sway anyone, I like the 100% handicap idea, one thing we don't have to worry about in this group of people is sandbaggers.  Maybe Ron could put out 3 shots for us, THS, US Open, and the ABC shot.  Bowl 6 across 6. Personally, I think we can just take their word on what their average is as long as they have a BR ID.

Unless I'm mistaken, Ron doesn't open until Noon on Sundays.  Things are really winding down by then and a lot of the participants have to leave early.  I doubt if Thongprincess could stick around very long and still catch a flight back to Calif.  The main event will have to be on Saturday to include as many people as possible.

Anyhow, keep the suggestions coming.  It's your gathering, let's make it as much fun and enjoyable as possible.

I only meant a few dollars per person to help with some expenses, but we can skip it.  I didn't want a bidding war.  100% handicap is fine for a gathering such as this, as long as Pchee isn't bowling.    I'd love to shoot on several different patterns like before.  2 games on 3 different pattens shouldn't take too long or be too much of a pain to set up.  Making the tournament for bragging rights and pulling names out of a hat and striking for one of the Lane#1 prizes isn't a bad idea.  If SrK gets a shot at the ball, I'm getting out the pool stick.

I was thinking of flying back on Monday rather than Sunday.  Last year with it being Memorial Day it was nice to have the extra day.  It didn't feel as rushed.

I am even willing to do the 100% hadcp with my 2004-2005 ave of 194.  My high book this year was only 175, a year of rebuilding and new coaching.  I am looking forward to this.

Sorry, I forgot a lot of you haven't been to a previous gathering.

Couple of years ago Ron was steaching Pchee2 how to get the ball down on the lane by suspending a cue stick across the lane out by the arrows.

When I tried it my ball hung a little on my thumb.  Splinters everywhere.  I think the cue bounced across about 3 lanes.

I have a sub lined up and a back up for her if something happens, so I am making reservations.

When it comes to pool or golf, I will be the heckler/cheerleader.  You think my bowling is amusing?  It is nothing compared to my ability to play pool, and golf is even more amusing

I missed the pool stick incident and would really like to see it in person

Oops.  Better bring the checkbook for KOTM's bar bill.  I think I owe him a few.  Might be cheaper to invite him over for dinner where I can at least control the liquor price.

I have a nice pool cue, but it's in Alabama.  Just as well since I'm not very good anymore.  The house I have my eye on has a nice den perfectly set up for a table.

I'll be putting in my vacation request tomorrow so I can enjoy all of the festivities.  Hopefully there won't be any conflict.

I only live 15 minutes away now, so I'll be around Sunday for anyone who wants to bowl, talk, drink, or all of the above.

I've been to three of these in the past, and it was worth every minute of the 11 hour drive.

Maybe I can talk Ron into putting up the bumpers on my lanes so I can tell ZMan I didn't ditch one all weekend.  It's also another chance to whip up on some Lane #1 nuts  *cough* Jesse, Jeff, Darold *cough*.  Eh, maybe I'll take it easy on them since Lane #1 is providing some goodies.

Well I live right outside of charlotte so i am fairly close myself, I will make a day of it Saturday for sure and if we have enough people I will make it back Sunday.  Strider whipping up on me a "Lane#1 nut" as you say, well that ain't saying much we both know  that.  I guess I better get some decent practice in with Leon so I can wow everyone thats new with my muscled swing and 10mph ball speed.  Oh and Geoff if you can whip up on satraightup7 now that i would like to see, cause afterall he is a lane#1 nut too.

I'll beat up on the Lane #1 nuts with just about any manufacturer.

AMF, Brunswick, Columbia (if we have an optional plastic event), Dynothane, MoRich, Roto Grip, Storm, Track, or Visionary.  Let me know which you want to lose to so I know what to bring.  Maybe I'll win the Buzzsaw and have KOTM drill it up, and then beat you by twice as many.

Just a little friendly trash talk.    I wish someone's hand was close to mine so I could try some of Lane #1's newer stuff.  I had a few in the past, but they weren't my cup of tea at the time.

Maybe Sr in this thread, or someone in another thread, can get a list of the possible attendees together so we can see who is going to show up.

Just a thought
