The Bowling Nemesis: Anybody have one?
« on: June 06, 2005, 06:58:09 AM »
I'm sure at one-time everyone has bowled with or against a person like this. Mine is a kid (to me anyway), 23 yrs old. Throws what seems to be a 20-22mph shot, with low revs, from the 8-10 board to the pocket on any condition. He does this everywhere and scores on any condition except heavy oil. Every alley in the area is dry to light oil. Most local tournaments are the same. Now he is accurate, has a good ball arsenal for his style, and he knows when to switch. I'll give him that. He bowls on my team on a Tues night league that I sub for. He also bowls on a different team on my Wed night league. He does have one of the top 5 averages in each league and there are some good bowlers in those houses.

My issues:
1) Very cocky to the point it's sickening. He mentions himself among the best amateurs in any area. Problem is, he never leaves the area and he is also one of those "I could be a touring pro if I really wanted to work at it, but I don't" guys.

2) We are about even in both leagues in average. He has beaten me solidly in two light oil tournaments and I have beaten him solidly in two heavy-oil tournaments. In the two tournaments he faired poorly, he "could have bowled a lot better, but he was tired from partying the night before." We always split pot games, with me making constant lane adjustments, and him standing in the same spot all night. He also makes statements like, "With me on the team we intimidate everyone in the league," "With me on the team, we can't lose," and also "I'm the guy everybody fears in this league, in addition to John (me)." He is condescending to the rest of the league and our own team. However, my team doesn't say anything because they don't want him to leave.

At this point, I know it is starting to sound like "sour grapes" but I'm curious, if any of you bowl with someone like this,  and does it annoy you to the point where you also want to strangle the guy or quit the team just so you can bowl against him???

Snap10,

H___ YEAH!!! I can relate to that...no names will be mentioned but I do understand where you are coming from...this guy where I live is on staff and thinks he is the God of Bowling. If your not in the "cliq" your nothing to him. It has been so bad we almost came to blows, but it has subsided for about six months and I don't say another word to him and he doesn't say anything to me, which is fine with me.

Another condescending thing about him is that I was bowling in our pba pattern type practice league and a buddy of mine (which is in with him) asked him when he was going to bowl with us and he replied:

"I'm not going to bowl on that s***! It's hard enough for me to bowl on a house shot!" (sarcastically said)...

It's absolutely messed up Snap, so I know where you are coming from.

Also, another bowler in our town was on his heels for the city record and came up short, two weeks later, he broke his own d*** record! I have learned that there are more people who dislike him than like him.

Bottom line, these people need to quit being so full of themselves and just be thankful God gave them the talent to do what they do everyday!

Consider yourself lucky. On Sunday night league, there's 4 !! of 'them'. Yes, they are better than I am WAY better. BUT...the next to the last night of the season, we had 3 of them walking back and forth waiting for us to finish ( we had rack problems) and we could not figure out why ? Our team was in 4th place, no way to catch much less pass them.

However....(this is my bad side) I have learned how to 'get under their skin' real fast and I do, a LOT. A bit of history, people who know me, KNOW I'm an A** hole, but I can be nice, if I have to (when the wife is around) so I know the little things that usually P&*S people off and if you want to be a "Richard Head" I can play that game as well, only better. Most of those types have learned, they are welcome to be "Richards" somewhere else, just not around our team.

Finally....22 years of military training paid off for something !!

The scratch league I've bowled the last 4 years is full of 'em. That's why I'm not bowling in that league next year.
Dave Husted subs regularly in that league, and although he can bowl circles around any one of these guys, he doesn't say a thing!
But the "wannabees" - I'm sick of the air balls, f bombs, kicking ball returns, hitting scorers, etc - just because they whiffed a 10 pin, or something else as trivial. I've complained to the league management several times, and they "think it's funny", so do nothing.

I'm tired of it - and - aw, shucks - you should see what happens when they get beat by a gurl...

One guy - lefty, thinks he's God's gift to the sport - and a 210 average at best. I was bowling against him. He missed two bucket spares - one in the 8th frame, one in the 10th. If he'd picked up the spare in the 10th, and struck, he would have shut our team out - and he bowls 3rd of 4. I struck out, DELIBERATELY throwing the last shot brooklyn. Our anchor gets up, and DELIBERATELY threw the first one brooklyn, and then got the next 2. He started swearing, kicking stuff, throwing equipment, etc - saying that he didn't care that he got beat, but he can't stand getting beat by a brooklyn. I turned to him, and informed him that if he'd picked up his spare and gotten decent count, we would have been shut out no matter what we did. So that no, he did not get beaten by a brooklyn. He let his team down by opening in the 10th. Then he REALLY got mad, and if I remember correctly, quit for the night.

I think the guys with mouths use such trash talk to help create a bit of an advantage for themselves. By creating this persona about their "talent", it allows their opponents fear beating them because of what they will say, react, etc. I think that trash talk is simply part of the strategic part of the game. However, Some athletes like Mumzie and her team, are able to counter the talk with such stories of 'reverse psychology' on their opponents.

Honestly, I don't mind the trash talk and big mouthing. I have my way of countering that. However, as an athlete, you always want to win. You will always have to adjust how you will conduct yourself during competition to maximize your chances of winning. Some cases you will have to be quiet and reserved and let your bowling do the talking. Sometimes you will have to let your opponents you're around and are not going to move anywhere. It just depends on the situation, I guess.
