is it a myth?
« on: June 01, 2016, 02:08:45 AM »
Is gaining revs a myth for those bowlers in the 190-210 range? I'm not talking about going from 325 to 400, but maybe around 15 to 35 more than their norm. (i.e. 325 to 345)

Most people in that average range vary that much or more from shot to shot.

People can clean up their release a little bit, but for the most part by the time you reach that level you got what you got.

I am in the minority and it seems to be working.  You can improve anything else in life so why not improve your revs which is simply a muscle/strength/coordination exercise.  It's not like we are talking about improving hitting a MLB fast ball.  I've been using Captains of Crush grippers of increasing strength, finger grippers, and built a forearm roller with a rope and tube.  I've noticed I am producing a lot more revs than last time I bowled which was in 2009.  I also record video and estimate my revs by measuring rotations over the time it takes to reach the pins.

Gaining some revs is not a myth, but it has nothing to do with your average.  In fact there is very little correlation between rev rates and average for bowlers on house shots.

I did CATS at Reno in 2004.  My rev rate was sub 250 that day.  I was consistently averaging 225-230 in leagues during that time.  However I needed to change my release and started working on not hitting put on the ball at release, but rather catching it at the bottom.  I also changed my finger pitches and started using inserts which I had never used.  In 2007 I again did CATS and my rev rate had increased to 275+.  In addition my other stats such as speed control and launch angle also improved.

It has always been my belief that one of the most difficult things to significantly change in bowling is a bowler's rev rate. Changing rev rates by themselves is one thing. Changing them and being able to score well on difficult patterns (vs. a house shot) is the real challenge.

I did the CATS once also in Reno and I was at 285 and that was 7 years ago. But with tweaking the grip, improving my approach, developing a different release, and practice....my revrate has increased to around 315. And I too changed finger inserts and how they fit. Also, I do work on my grip strength, but not for bowling. I've hand/wrist injuries in my years in MA and if I don't keep my hands active, arthritis and tendinitis kicks in.

It's definitely possible by making some tweaks to the release. This summer I've been working on staying behind the ball as long as possible but then over-exaggerating getting my hand around the ball. By doing this I've increased my axis rotation but it also seems like I've increased my rev rate some too
