Issues With Cutting Down Plug
« on: January 10, 2016, 10:53:30 AM »
I'm looking for some input on cutting down plug.

I believe that the plug material is fine.  I've verified ratios of Epoxy and hardener.  The plug sets up well with no air bubbles.

When I cut it down, I noticed that I get some amount of "chatter".  It's almost as the plug cutter is " bouncing".  It makes me think that it may be either the press (although I recently went through it all and everything seemed tight) or the cutter.  Maybe it's the speed?

I took a short clip of it and a few pictures.

The good news is that with scraping it down and some spinner work, I can get it to look decent.  It just takes a bit of effort.

Thanks

My first guess was that the plug cutter has gotten dull and needs to be replaced.  However, after looking at the first pic it looks like the right side was hitting lower.  Is the press truly at zero?  Sometimes you have to re-calibrate it.

You are always going to have the chatter like the video when cutting the fingers because the contact on the plug isn't consistent and constant because of the oval dam.  Give it more pressure and it won't chatter as much as it does in the video.

I was worried about it grabbing and taking a big chunk out of the ball...

Thanks!

Yeah...it vibrated the L/R tightening knob loose and I wasn't paying attention until it touched the surface.

I vote dull plug cutter. New or sharper ones cut so much cleaner

I get the same result with my Innovative cutter with my home built ball jig. It did this from the time it was new.  Here is the response I received from Innovative.

"Either the jig and or machine is vibrating, the cutter is dull or the plug material is too soft"

I think vibration is the issue in my case and possibly yours if you have ruled out everything else.

I just leave the plug a little higher than normal and finish it off with a razor blade , sand paper and a ball spinner.
