Title: Moving your eyes in relation to moving your feet question.
Post by: thedjs on October 21, 2014, 11:08:50 PM
If you make a five board move on the approach, what is the usual movement of your eyes?  For example, if you are standing on 20 and looking at 10 then you move five boards left to the 25 board, what would usually be your target on the lanes?

On a THS I normally move my eyes in 2 to 3 boards at the target point.

However it depends on the pattern and where others are bowling on the lane.

It kinda depends on the length of the pattern.  To achieve the same exit point of a 40 foot pattern, the difference is 2:1.  So for every 2 boards you move with your feet, you will need to move your mark 1 board.

Longer patterns will have a smaller ratio (but not noticeably much) and shorter patterns will have a larger ratio (again, not noticeably much).

Another issue will be how you are attacking the dry.  If you are attacking the dry outside of the pattern and then want to attack the dry at the end of the pattern, you could have a 1:1 ratio or less.

I often pick up the same board quite a bit further down the lane as I get deeper.  For example if I am targeting 11 board at the arrows, I might make a 5 or 6 board move on a flatter pattern, and be targeting 11 or 12 at 30-40 feet.  It really depends on how the pattern is playing.  Bowled on a Badger pattern the other night in a real old anvil lane house.  Two guys on my pair were carving out a track between 10 and 15 with high revs and super dull equipment.  I ended up making 1 and 1 parallel moves all 4 games because they created so much over under in the heads that I couldn't touch much of the track they were creating without getting my ball sideways too early.

I'm usually making moves of 1 board (no change at arrows), 2 and 1, 3 and 2, and if it's a big move 5-3 etc (this is usually a zone change type move).....
