Are you called on to Lead? Even if you don't want to.
« on: October 31, 2003, 02:42:06 PM »
I just recently posted on a forum about getting a competitive edge.

I have always thought the number one element was team dynamics and the performance usually of the lessor players on the team.
ie like the Florida Marlins this year vs the dominant Yankees.

Fortunately I've often been on winning bowling and other teams in sports.
Often I've been looked to for leadership not in a formal way but in an informal way that I knew that the team would live or die based in many ways on how I did.

One league I bowled in I was definetely the weakest of 5.  Our team lived or died by what I did.  Note all bowlers on team were capable of over 200 and 3 of 5 capable of over 220.

Yet only one player of the 5 seemed to go his own way.
All others on the team rose or fell with what I did.  If I missed a spare most of them could not convert, If I struck most of them could strike out.

I could see them sitting on their seats waiting for their cues from me their weakest bowler.  Fortunately they lived and we took home $20,000.

I've also been on other teams where I've been the strong player and the team has followed me to the top or bottom.

Now as a person who is never interested in formal leadership!  I don't like to be captain, organize meetings or anything, I find this whole phenomena interesting. (Note when I bowl I am almost incapable of barely even counting(something about a right hander trying to bowl lefthanded and all that right brain left brain stuff).

Are you asked to often informally lead?

Why does this happen?

REgards,

I know it is going to happen on most teams I play on in any sport and it has never made sense to me. However, as any season goes by it just starts to happen, and I'm ready for it.

Call me Pat!  On a lessor level!

Other's who have been called on to lead without seeking it out?

REgards,

PS My sister had it but even more than me!
Saw it many times!
Quick Story.  She was a good but not great basketball player 6th player first off bench a pure shooter.  Her high school team advanced farther than any team in the 20 year history of the school to the local sectionals.  5000 people in the stands.

Super star center and forward both were so nervous on the court they looked like they were gonna lose lunch and breakfast, first layups there hands were shakin so much they barely touched the rim.  Score about 30 to 17.

They call sis in the game, a wry smile, pass to her, plant swish 25 footer!
Crowd wild.  Next possession plant swish 20 footer.  You get it, then plant alley oop confident slam by the nervous star center.  5 minutes score now 36- 34 her team Sis sits down with 5 minutes played and 14 points, 3 assists its all over, but the frosting.

Team came in 2nd in the state!  6th player.

come on!  Don't be shy.

Are there others that your teams live and die on how you do?

I know there are!

PS You don't have to be the best on the team for others to look for cues from.

I'm the opposite. I've bowled 700+ and had the team lose every game. I'm a loner by nature. I wouldn't know how to lead even if asked. One of the reasons I like bowling so much is the way you can separate your performance from your teammates.

LL,

I fall into the same category as Louie. I am the highest average on our league and my team has the third lowest handicap. It seems whenever I bowl good (except last week), we lose. A year ago I shot my first 700 series with 279, 235, 279 for a 794 series, we lost all 3 games and series. We just happened to be bowling against lower ave. bowlers that were getting there spares. I shoot almost 200 pins over average and we get slaughtered. I guess it's a good thing though because if I am bowling around my average plus or minus 15 pins or so then we usually win. But if I get hot for a game or two, my team seems to slack off for a while. But they all still look to me for help when their normal line isn't working, or they aren't getting anywhere near the head pin.

I'm the highest average on my team, and we have the highest team average in the league (26 teams).

I bowl lead-off because I like it, and if I stick a mark of some sort up there, the girls usually follow my lead.  If I bowl bad then maybe two others will also bowl bad.  Thankfully, those nights are rare (unless there's a ton of secretary crap that I have to handle, lol).

We won't be bowling this league next year since before the season ends we'll be over the cap of 775, and since this league subtracts 100% from 775 if the team goes over, we're to the point that we're tired of starting out x number of pins in the hole before throwing the first ball.  The new league we're going to has handicrap based on the difference of the team averages, so if we happen to be higher than the team we're bowling, at least we get to bowl scratch  YAY!
