Arsenal Question
« on: September 08, 2015, 01:16:17 PM »
I'm thinking about starting to enter into some tournaments soon (I haven't bowled a tourney in about 6 years when I did youth tournaments) and wanted to get your opinions on my arsenal. I'm not sure how versatile it will be on the tougher patterns, so I'm trying to see if I need to add or change anything.

Proposed Arsenal:
Storm Tropical Storm
Track 400A SE (Skid Flip)
Ebonite Pursuit S (Mid-lane)
Brunswick Soul Mate (Skid Flip)

I have an undrilled Candy Cande Vibe and an undrilled CSystem Ulti-Max that I could mix into it.

I also have an Ebonite Total NV, Ebonite NVS, and Columbia 300 Panic that would take some work, but could also be added in.

I would prefer to avoid buying more equipment, unless what I have just isn't going to cut it. If I can make what I have work, I would prefer that.

Thanks for your opinions!

Well it really just depends on the type of tournaments you're going to bowl. On tougher shots you generally don't want skid flip.

The tournaments I've gone to especially ones I've gone to in Vegas, there is plenty of oil and my weaker balls that work great on house shots just slide too much because of the greater volume.

Honestly if I had the money to, I'd have 2-3 balls I'd only throw in house shot leagues and 4-5 that are focused only on tournaments and tougher patterns. At least for me, there is a big difference in my regular houses and tournaments. And that's only because my houses don't offer any tougher leagues

I play with pretty high revs so I should be able to use them for moderate stuff, but you're right, on something that's high volume, skid-flip won't work too well. Would the Pursuit S be OK to use on something like that, or is there a better coverstock/layout option?

I think a lot of times people tend to forget you can tame the skid/flip reaction with sanding the ball (not saying you forgot that), but I think anyone can use any ball on tournaments as long as you have the right coverstock prep/hand position/ect.

As a high rev player, I don't think your arsenal will be a problem.  Biggest problem high rev guys have is trying to over power the pattern and create area that isn't there.  Work on ways to square up a bit more than you normally do, then experiment with your equipment to see what works best when you play straighter.  If you hit house patterns in the tournaments something in your bag should work too.

Here's a video of the Soul Mate thrown on lanes right after league (though it's almost like this on fresh too).

Lots of hook for a skid flip. I'm figuring I could use that on a higher volume shot, more than I could use the 400A, which is a lot tamer.

Edit: I should say lots of hook for a skid flip that I'm throwing. Usually I can play around 10-15 at the arrows and break around the 5 board, on fresh lanes. This video is after league, like I said, but on fresh it's almost this crazy.
