My dad bowls again..after a total hip replacement !!!
« on: March 22, 2011, 01:10:22 PM »
So tonight was a great night ! My pops (75) had a total left hip replacement in July of last year. Hes always been a bowler his whole life and actually had to quit a bout 3 years ago due to the pain in his hip.

I honestly though I would never see him bowl again..but tonight I was going through my storage getting out some of my old gear since I'm getting back into the game after a 2 year break and I ran across his gear in there, so I decided to bring it home. So just it just so happens he had a appt with his hip Dr for a follow up and I took him. I ask the Dr about bowling and he said there should be no prob with a little bowling !

So tonight I got to see my pops bowl with his trusty MoRich Awesome Hook..Never though I would see the day !

We shot 3 games a piece on lane #1 with about 20 lanes until next closest bowler. Perfect private time to get a fresh start back!

Just thought I would share

There is a man in my senior league that had a hip replacement around 4 months ago take or give a wee bit and he is back bowling full time without the slightest sign of a limp. If a person didn't know he had a hip replacement, he would have no clue that he did have one when watching him bowl without any ill effects.

Caution him to be careful about bending to his left and down to pick things up.  I dislocated mine (right hip) a couple of years ago working in the yard.  I bent to my right and down to pick up something slightly below my feet and I felt it pop over and up.  I fell down and was totally helpless until the ambulance got there.  This is definitely an experience he wants to avoid.  --  JohnP

The Dr gave us the cautions before and after about not bending more the 90 degrees over parallel to his torso. Even though I don't have to, I still give him a hand tying his left shoe every now and then

The said that this precaution is in place until the 1 year mark or until the muscles work/grow themselves back over the new ball and socket.

He has the last hip compontets, so it is the big ball and socket

great!  the big ball makes it very unlikely there will be a dislocation in the future.

Mine had been in place six years when it dislocated, my surgeon said he was really surprised it popped out, but it did.  I don't mean to be alarmist, but it can happen.  --  JohnP

Yes you have to be careful.  If it happens several times the surgeon might recommend a revision and you really don't want that.
