Title: Need a ball that is clean thru front & mids but can handle a hang spot downlane
Post by: earlyrolling on September 13, 2017, 11:08:11 AM
I am a righty (higher speed and higher revs) and I need pearl / hybrid that is clean thru front & mids but strong on the back and able to handle (overcome) a hang spot downlane.  Any suggestions?

Pearl/hybrids are fine but you'll need some surface if you do have a hang spot/carry down IMO.

Prefer slight surface to over come dirty back ends.  Radical Ridiculous Asymm's are on sale closed out now by many dealers.  One ball I looked at before a health issue (shoulder) that I have.

How about softening that speed........

I did try that some but that resulted in the fronts grabbing the ball too early then.

Your ball is telling you you're in the wrong part of the lane as it over/under hooks.  MOVE THEM FEETS!

Neat sanding trick. Take a fresh 2000 grit abralon pad, and sand it with the grit lines parallel to the track. Will probably allow you to move left, and when the ball flares, the grit will help it get thru the hang.

(I'm not even being sarcastic)

I like the suggestion of squaring up and playing as long pattern.
I don't have a rolly pearl.  I have an undrilled pin up BWGold and a drilled pin down pearl Shout, the latter of which seems too weak.  I do have a RICO Hyroad I could try (once I get the thumb fit adjusted). Another option would be to take my pin down original GameBreaker or Optimus Solid down to 4K.  Thoughts?

Is it a hang spot, or an overblock THS with a heavy puddle in the middle, no oil on the outside, and very little taper? Very different answers.

I bowl second shift on an overblocked THS, it can be an absolute terror. Slowing down on a tough overblock may not be the answer, it can really exacerbate the overreaction off the dry boards (especially second shift after the no handers bowled 3 games with their oil monsters).

First thought: how can the BW Gold be undrilled AND pin up?

Sorry, what I wanted to say is that I plan to drill it pin up (above bridge), with everything else stacked below.

Now that you put it that way, this 44ft pattern does seem like an overblock THS with a heavy puddle in the middle and no oil on the outside, and a fat taper.  Game one I could roll over the 10-board at arrows and get it out to the 1-board downlane and the ball would hit high flush. 2nd game the outside became too dry but when I tried to move in (still swinging ball to right) to avoid the dry (now anything right of 5-board) I hit either the fat taper or some carrydown (one bowler threw urethane for half a game) and ball blew past the breakpoint. When I moved in deeper, I could not get any equipment to turn the corner (nothing pearl except the pin-down Shout).  So next time I will square up and adjust speed if needed.
