I am the only one?

It seems I really like my solid cover-stock balls polished and my pearl balls with surface. I find this really interesting and slightly defeating the purpose, but if it works it works I guess?

I was the same way...until I started bowling on Sport shot conditions. On house shots, the extra oil in the middle creates hang for me with pearl covers, even pearls with surface.

However, move to flatter shots, and the hang is gone, and so is the hold I am used to with solids is gone as well. Pearls hold the line longer and thus for me, especially on lighter volumes and shorter Sport patterns, pearls are the name of the game.

The last 3 weeks I have had a really good look on Alcatraz with the Raven Invasion (pearl reactive) and we moved to the Boardwalk pattern last week and provided I had enough speed, the Invasion was the right ball again. When I finally had to move away from the Invasion, I went to the Warlock XV pearl and bingo, right ball again.

Everyone is different though...and the patterns will play different from house to house and from surface (wood) to different surfaces (synthetic, guardian, etc). So what works for me in this house (all wood surface) may be the completely wrong ball at the house right down the road.

If you disregard the labels of pearl, hybrid, and solid and adjust accordingly based off the reaction you are looking for and the balls intended purpose will be pleasantly surprised with the results.

Is a pearl really a pearl?

…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

I agree with this.  Though some may poo-poo on the question, it has merit.  What makes a pearl ball a pearl ball as marketed by the manufacturers?  Is it an additive?  Probably, but is it an additive that may be added (though at a lesser quantity) to balls not called "pearl?"  The additive we view as pearl in the coverstock is not the same as the additive used for pearl performance.  Those are just cosmetic. 

I firmly believe the manufacturers are using older terminology to give consumers an easy way of categorizing the balls in a lineup.  In reality, I feel they are producing coverstocks any way they can to get the look they want, regardless of the actual makeup, and then telling us the earlier rolling version is a "solid", the latest rolling a "pearl" and the one in the middle a "hybrid."

In all reality the words pearl, hybrid, and solid mane very little anymore. You are much better off paying attention to the surface of the ball and the motion the manufacturer intended. One of the reasons I don't understand why everyone seems to get all jumped up on the next great Storm or other manufacturer releasing the same ball already available except that it's now a pear instead of a solid. Which carries the obligatory surface change along with it. The only reason to wait for the manufacturer to release the new pearl or solid version of the ball you like is if you like the color of the new one better.

I'm not saying there is no difference their maybe some slight difference between the same ball with a polished pear or a polished solid but if I'm honest with myself the difference is probably smaller than +- targeting my target.

Hopefully this idea is catching on more with bowlers to have better success on ball choices and reactions based on surface and ball intent vs manufacturer hype and sales gimmicks.

How many times have you seen "hybrid" bowling balls with the coverstock being a mix or solid and pearl appearance and the bowlers say when they see it thats why it's a hybrid because it has a mix of both......

Hybrid can be two type of any covers, two different solids combined, two different pearls, etc.... Take a trip through EBI and see how they pour the covers into the molds and the entire manufacturing process and you'll be amazed! Watching a video doesn't do it justice!! Just my $.02, Bruce

It would be great to tour any facility.

No matter what formulas are mixed together it all has the same surface finish when the ball is sent from the line. (Sanded, polished etc)
