My new "Most Embarrassing League Moment"
« on: January 19, 2005, 10:17:26 PM »
I thought my most embarrassing moment was when my ball completely stuck to my thumb last year.  Nope!!  I've got a new one.  I'm the #2 guy on my team, so after #1 makes his spare, I go to the ball return and start my preshot routine.  Pick up my ball and wipe it off.  Then I dry my hands over the blower.  As I find my starting spot, I put my fingers in the holes followed by the thumb -- it's a perfect fit.  I drop the ball in front of me to make sure my pointer finger is supporting the weight of the ball...Excellent...I find my mark, start my approach and just nail the release...It's rolling right over my mark and headed right toward the break and I'm posting -- it was perfect in every way......EXCEPT......NO PINS!!!!  Apparently the machine hadn't reset yet....Luckily the rake wasn't down!!  After my ball comes back, I regain my composure, re-roll and leave a 6-7-10...

That one is easy. It happened to me last night. I was bowling anchor and stepped up with an open in the 9th frame. My team was trailing by 9 pins. I step up for the tenth frame and let one fly. It looks good, pocket 7 10. Now only needing one to tie, I figured I would go after the 7 pin. Needless to say I missed it. We lost by one pin!
To me that is not only the worst thing that could have happened, but embarrasing to boot.

During last weeks tight 3rd game, I chucked one in the gutter to start the 10th after a triple -- luckily the last 3 guys were out of there minds in the 10th, so we took the game and all 4 points...

In my brother's league two weeks ago, a guy goes front 10 - foul - 9 for 279.
Then last week, front 9 - foul - 9 for 258.
He then blamed everyone and their brother for him not throwing a 300.

I had a great moment at a tourney last year. I'm grinding my way through a set, trying to get something going in order to make the cut. I finally throw a double. I line up to throw my next shot, finally feeling as if I might have a reaction to work with. I go through my approach and release ball. The next thing I know, I'm lying in the gutter. Even though I never left the settee  area, and I was standing in the same spot that I had been standing between every shot, I stepped in a big glob of something and stuck so bad that I launched myself over the foul line face first. Needless to say, I foul, giving my 0 on my double, and a whole lot of embarassment. Since that time, I've learned to test my slide foot on the approach before stepping up for every shot. That's learning a lesson the really hard way.

Gene, my wife and I got the greatest laugh from your last embarrassing moment. She says she is really surprised it hasn't happend to me yet. I do the samething, I never look at the pin deck prior to the shot. I'll get ready to begin the approach and someone will yell, Steve you don't have a full rack, (well I've know that for years) Thanks for the laugh.

A few years back I bought the Pro Release with the extended finger support. It was the first night on our Tuesday night mix league when I decided to try it. Well I placed it on and adjusted all of the straps. I then picked up my ball (felt okay)  and started towards the line. Once the ball reached about the halfway point of my backswing the ball just came straight off of my hand. Needless to say it hit the floor and rolled back into the seating area. I turned around and everyone was a kind looking for my reaction. Well I smiled and walked back to my ball, picked it up and started my approach again. And yes you guessed it, I dropped the ball for the second time it a row!

Now everyone was looking at me and I was “upset”.  I calmly went over to my bag took off the wrist support made a ball change and threw a strike. I went home and cut off the extended finger support and it has worked perfectly ever since.

I've bowled on the wrong pair during league night, confusing all four teams.

Kill the back row (or maybe this should read "make your spares, dummy")

My most embarrassing moment occurred when I was about 11-12 years old and I wanted to really crank a shot but had no idea how to do it. As I'm trying to let go of the ball I turn my wrist/hand and I manage to hang onto the ball WAY too long. It goes almost straight up and plops on the lane at about the 5 board, bounces into the gutter and flops over onto the next lane, where some other kid is waiting to shoot at a spare. And it was at a tournament, no less.

A couple of times when I was a junior I tried using powder and my hand stuck in the ball, so I landed on the lane with the ball. That really sucked at the time!

And at state tournament (also when I was a junior), my slacks tore from my crotch all the way up to the belt line in the back. Unlike Mark Baker, I wore underwear at the time so it wasn't as bad as his experience, but it was still bad enough. After finishing my game bowling with my towel tucked into my waist, I persuaded the tournament officials to allow me to wear jeans instead of slacks to finish my session.

All of these things happened many, many years ago. I hope this doesn't mean that I'm due. Perhaps I'll drop the ball on my foot tonight!

You weren't unlucky when you left that corner pin, so shut up about it already!!

This one just happened tonight...

Bowler before me leaves deadwood in the right gutter.  So I decide to take care of the problem by throwing my ball slowly down the gutter to push the pin to the back.

Too bad it took me two shots to accomplish this feat!

(shot my lowest series of the season...when it rains it pours, I couldn't even hit the gutter for God's sakes!!!)
