Release problems
« on: December 09, 2009, 09:51:54 AM »
So I've been working on my release for the last month or so, after noticing my track is pretty low and wanting to get less spinner-ish on my release.

The first thing I've seen is that my balls seem to be rolling much more down the lane, and I am definitely getting a better reaction. The issue is my track is still rather low, and I'm wondering if it might be related to the way my balls are drilled.

I got my Virtual Gravity and spare ball last year and they were drilled with 0 pitch in the thumb, and span was 4 3/8". After having some trouble with keeping the ball on my hand, my pro shop operator shortened my span to 4 1/4" and added a forward pitch (1/8") I think. I was lazy and never had my spare ball redrilled, just the Virtual. I got the Smash Zone this summer and it has the same specs as the Virtual.

Now my plastic ball has a much higher track, about an inch from the thumb. Even when I throw it as my strike ball I've noticed that the track is that high. My two guesses are that I'm trying too hard to hook the other balls which is causing me to get around the  ball too much, or that because I can get my thumb out of the plastic  ball quicker, it gets off my hand cleaner and picks up more of  a forward roll. Any ideas would be great.

Ah, I know that the plastic balls don't flare, but I didn't realize that would make the track higher too. I figured given the same release it would just be one ring closer to where the other  two balls have their track.

That being said, are there any tips for cutting down on some of the axis tilt I'm getting? Because even when I do drills where I'm just standing at the foul line and throwing the ball, as much as it looks like the ball has mostly forward roll, when I see the oil  rings, based off the track diameter, it seems like I have close to 30 degrees of tilt.

The general recommendation is to figure your PAP using a plastic (poly) ball. You are probably correct in your assessment that if your thumb is getting out of your spare ball cleaner and faster, it will affect how you roll the ball.
