Timing issue
« on: November 08, 2009, 09:13:57 AM »
Ok so I did some video earlier this week and the two things that stuck out very much were my pulling the ball to get it into my swing, a minor issue with my push away, also I saw that I was losing all of the leverage that was I have with a high back swing and good knee bend by my release being too far out in front of my foot. I have tried to start my release sooner but with too much variation. What is the best way to make this more comfortable and controllable? Or should I just continue what I'm doing my ball speed is right at 17 and my rev rate is 320ish.

In my experience teaching timing, which I see as the number one most important aspect of bowling, I would say without seeing you bowl, your feet are getting to fast. Every time I deal with releasing late it is because the person's feet don't match their arm speed. I would first try to slow down your feet. If you watch the pros, you will see that the best take a surprising amount of tie to get to the foul line. You really can't be too slow. The other problem I have seen a lot of people have on this is that they are thinking about pulling through the ball. That is all well and good, but if you get too focused on that you keep pulling more and more which gets your release point farther and farther out onto the lane. The point of optimum leverage for your release is right next to your slide foot. I would say, try to visualize yourself setting down the ball and rolling it out onto the lane instead of throwing it or pulling through it.

Without seeing the video, I'll go off your comments about pulling the ball into the swing and being outta time..

I think you are over extending the pushaway.  Does that make sense?  When you over extend your arm, you pull the ball down instead of letting it fall into the swing.  This will cause you speed up your feet in an effort to keep up with your armswing.

When I practice, I focus on keeping the ball over my right foot on my pushaway(righty).  This gets the ball into the swing at the proper time.
