New Ball vs Used Ball
« on: May 05, 2010, 12:47:05 AM »
Just wanted you opinion on used balls vs new balls...

A used ball is drill for someone else and they bought it according to what they wanted the ball to do.  I know we expect great scores with any ball but wouldn't you have even better scores with a new ball designed for you?

I ONLY buy used stuff that has the layout I want on it. I never buy a ball that I have to plug and redrill the entire ball. I normally have to just replace the grips and plug the thumb. Thats about $20-$25 total and the ball is ready to go.

I guess what I am saying - Is buying a used ball worth buying after making the neccessary adjustment vs getting a ball that is already designed the way you want it...

I think I've shot better scores overall with used balls than new ones.

When I get most new balls for $70 or less shipped to the door off here or ebay, or bowlingball.com, and drill them myself its almost as cheap.

If you get a ball used for $30-$50 shipped to you and plugged it completely and have it redrilled your looking at $30 in plugging and $10-$30 in finger inserts and thumb inserts? So up to $60+ tax for a complete plug and redrill with inserts.

Or if you just plug the thumb and redrill it with a slug thats maybe $10 for plug and $15 for the slug so $25 + tax on whatever the ball cost.

It can be expensive. Granted for many if you have to pay to have your new ball drilled ,that was purchased else where, some places will try and screw you that way as well.

For me I take new over used.

I have heard this several time but getting a ball plugged and redill a few times takes away from the ball...  Dont know if this is true or not

Generally this is because you change the shape of the core by drilling it.(most of time) When you plug it you don't exactly put it back.

This one makes me laugh every time I read it.  If you completely plug and resurface it doesn't make a difference...that is if you're referring to rolling over the lefties track.  Even if you're referring to rolling over plug, if it's done right it will be smooth and most of the time not enough of it to change reaction.

As far as the topic on this post goes I have no problem with used balls if I know they've been taken care of.  I always completely plug them..resurface and start from scratch.  But if it's a ball from someone that's never even wiped it off...not worth it.

95% of the time I buy used balls and have no problems. Even with plug in my track.
