Clammy thumbs and warm nights
« on: September 10, 2006, 09:12:54 AM »
I had some thumb issues last night due to it being too warm in the center where I bowl.  As I got kind of warm, the pad portion of my thumb got sort of clammy and gummy feeling, which started screwing up my release.  I use Magic Carpet (good stuff) in my thumb hole, and the thumb hole wasn't too tight, it was just that the clamminess of my thumb was dragging on the front of the thumb hole.  Tried some Easy Slide on my thumb, but that only helped for a couple of frames.  What else could I try if this happens again?  Is there some type of tape I could put on my thumb that would give me a smooth release, or maybe something else, like spraying anti-perspirant on my thumb prior to bowling?  I'm open to suggestions.

For me, one those nights where my hands get sticky like that, I just wash my hands with soap and cold water.  You want to keep your hands as cool and dry as possible, so between shots try to use a grip sac or something of the like.

Try washing your hands with soap and cold water.  Has worked for me.  I would believe cool, dry hands help a lot.  I've also used a little hand conditioner (NOTE: NOT ROSIN) as well

Get a big cup of ice from the snack bar.  Suck on ice continually during your league session.  This helps keep your body temp down.  --  JohnP

If excessive skin is the issue, you can have it cosmetically "scratched off". With less skin, less soaking and "gummy" feeling.

Additionally, I'd wrap my thumb before each shot in a thin cotton cloth or paper tissue, tightly, and slam it into the hole, wait some seconds and get the thumb out again. Unwrap the thumb and immediately start your shot. This will press blood out of your thumb for a short period and dry the surface, so it will find more place in the hole for a short period.

Do not use rosin or a puff ball on your thumb or thumb hole! It will increase friction and probably make things even worse!

Turbo Grip tape; the one with the urethane nubbies. It's great stuff.
