TRAVEL LEAGUE
« on: September 10, 2006, 06:24:56 AM »
My 14year old son has been asked to be part of the Bowling centers TRAVEL LEAGUE. I am not sure what this entitles. I know that they will travel to other centers and bowl, but would it be a good idea for my wife and I to let him participate in this league? He throws in the 190's and has a fluid swing with alot of ball movement on the backend.
I guess what I am asking is would it be good for him to bowl against other competition right after bowling in his league? What are all of your thoughts on this?

Let him shoot the travel league.. Even though its still on a THS it will give him some different looks at different patterns and challenge him a bit.  Let him get out and learn.  The youth traveling league I shot in taught me a great deal, and has helped me a TON even today.

Thanks TROY. My wife and I are still talking about it since it does not start until November. But thanks for your input...

I would have to agree with Sawbones....LET IT BE HIS DECISION.....and if he chooses to, it will allow him to grow as a bowler. The different conditions, and usually better competition will assist him in developing a stronger game, and knowledge of bowling.

This will also bring new "bowling friends" into his life.

The Junior Travel league here was a great experience for my son.

The local travel leauge for the youth bowlers here goto 10-15 different houses, rarely going to the same place twice. These kids see everything from THS to Sport to PBA to PBA Regional patterns. And they dont usually bowl till Sunday at noon letting them bowl their normal Saturday leauges. If he wants to join it and you can afford it and if he wants to take bowling in a serious manner (like going pro or doing pba regionals) this will help him in that experience some. If you can do what I mentioned, and dont force him, then let him do it.

A while back I ran a youth travel league.  The kids who participated, loved it.  They got to see what other houses put out and felt better prepared for tournaments, especially City.

If he wants to bowl in it, I'd say let him.  I have run into several of the kids who bowled in the one I ran, they are adults now, and they have great memories to share.

If he wants if you'd do it, see about joining JBT or something similar to that in your area.

Traveling leagues are an excellent way to improve your game. They can be a little humbling at times if your a "house bowler" that can only hit your house shot. Being able to play different oil patterns and lane surfaces only make you ore versatile. My son shot his award score(300) during the youth traveling league at his least favorite house the played, go figure lol

1st of all, it must be his decision to join a league at all. Sawbones is correct. To keep up a league presence, you need dedication over a period, not just a one-shot.

Besides, even if it is "only" a THS situation in each house, I'd highly recommend joining it. Playing outside of your familiar surroundings, and even under tournament pressure, will surely be a help to become a better bowler.

But do not put too much pressure or too much bowling on him at a time. If this one is an extra league, on top of his normal starts (I guessed so from your description), I'd rather stay away, it might be simply too much.

If your son decides that it is something that he would enjoy and is interested in doing go for it.  I never had a traveling league here in Idaho, however there were 2-3 junior tournaments a month here that travel to local as well as distant centers in the state and I must say it was a great learn experience. Met many new people and helped out my game tremediously.
