What would cause this?
« on: September 08, 2014, 10:54:52 AM »
At the last part of last season I hung in the ball a couple of times.  Now I know this is not a big deal, but when I say hung I mean the ball did not come off my hand.  One time I went down with it and was lucky I didn't get hurt.  The next time it hung so bad that when it did come off it landed in the adjoining lane.  From then on I've been afraid to put much hand in the shot.  The balls were drilled with 0 thumb pitch.  Starting this year I've had all of them changed to 1/8 reverse and so far I'm not having a problem but the fear is still there and, at the least bit of hanging, I loosen my grip and start dropping the ball.  The thumb hole is not too tight.  I'm using an Ebonite wrist support, the one with the extended finger, if that makes a difference.

Has anyone out there ever had this problem and, if so, what did you do to correct it?  Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated cause it's made my bowling go south in a hurry.

Thanks.

Did you have your span measured with the support on? If not, it's possible your span and pitches could be off a little

That sounds like excessive gripping to me. Many people have a thumb hole that's too big, so they squeeze to compensate. On a day where their thumb swells a little, they still grip because it's muscle memory and hang up. I've been there in the past. Once you learn what light/normal grip pressure feels like, you won't do it again.

Get rid of the "wrist support"

If not, quit turning around the ball so much.  The wrist support you're using is a "death trap" if you overturn the ball.

Never thought I would say this, but I agree with bullred... What is the matter with me?

Those supports are horrible. If you MUST use it, get refit with the support on your hand.

agree with above
proper fit and the proper use of tape to relax the grip pressure are a must
i hadn't used tape in 25+ years, i found out that my grip was to short and i was squeezing it, no matter how hard I tried, i couldnt come out the ball clean.
Now with the proper span and learning how you use tape, its much, much better.
the more you use your thumb to squeeze the ball, the more you flex your thumb and the larger your knuckle gets inside the thumb hole.
ideally, you want the back of the thumbnail to touch the opposite side of the thumbhole.
this assures that the thumb is straight, i have to tape my thumb pretty tight these days to hang on to it
