New oil maching, more oil, now carrydown
« on: January 18, 2015, 11:16:10 AM »
This is a house I have been practicing at, and probably will be shooting their next year as it's closer.

They got a new oil machine, 40 ft Christmas tree that now seems like much more oil (claim to be same pattern, but they admit this machine puts out more oil).

Anyway, my Cyclone used to be fine at both houses (my league and practice). Now it's not what I will need at the new house. At best it's now down/in at 7, and when carrydown hits, it's useless.

I have ordered a Motiv Sigma Sting and do have Cyclone GB to drill (solid 10.7 cover at 2000)...but wondering what else you might suggest. I do like the Assassin Widow Legend.

Light/dry have been the norm here, now at least 1 house is showing some.

Covert Revolt would be a great step up from sigma sting. Great strong smooth and continuous. Gives you a sanded solid to read the pattern and manage the additional oil volume. Plus you are not a lot of revs

Try the Cyclone at around 500 grit, you may be (pleasantly) surprised.  --  JohnP

I agree with JohnP, hitting the cyclone with a lower grit is gonna make it match up better with the more oil thats being put out. On a side note, the sting is going to be a great step up if you wanted to keep the cyclone at the surface its at now and should be the answer to your problems and if you get the legend its a step up from the sting.

If it is still a house shot, regardless of higher oil volume you can probably move a couple of boards further right to find more friction.

Got out to 3 and still wouldn't recover, just going to get stronger equipment. Want to keep the cyclone at factory finish.

Want to keep the cyclone at factory finish.

Why?  Surface change is the simplest and most effective way to modify ball reaction.  And, after about three games the ball is no longer at factory finish anyway.  --  JohnP

Because my league is still the dry house and the cyclone is fine there.

I don't think buying the sting and something strong is a bad idea.. Looking at your arsenal you listed, they're less aggressive so i think of it as expanding your arsenal

Don't mind expanding the arsenal as both houses have been dry and not needed anything stronger. Also thinking of getting another cyclone and keeping it between 500-1000 and see what that does.

Let me tell you something that may be going on. After the bowling center I worked at for 9 years closed down, my league folded. I went to a bowling center and joined a different league that used to be at the center I worked at. The first year was similar to the shot at the old center as far as over under, but maybe a hair shorter. Now this year they upgraded to a new oiler in the Kegel Flex that oils the lanes and switches lanes itself. I noticed the same thing. I had a lack of backend. There a ton of oil. Yet the whole league with exception of a few are bowling their brains out.  I was frustrated leaving pocket splits and washouts. When I moved right it was through the nose, I knew it wasn't bad timing because I worked on timing all summer to get back to where I was 2 years ago when I had 4 honor scores and a high average of 231.

Here was the solution. Drift right.

I'm not saying a ball change and speed change doesn't help as adjustments throughout the series, but drifting right created the area I needed to play the lanes and to get the proper funnel effect. The light splits are now gone. I've been the best spare shooter in the league all season, so no problems there.

I personally would never suggest to someone they should start drifting right as the solution to a particular shot.  All drifting right does is put you at a spot at the line further right than you started.  Why not just start further right and keep your regular approach?

Is it drifting right or is it walking a straight line and going right?
