Long story, and I wont subject you to the rest of it, but lm going to end up throwing plastic a lot this year for strikes.
If you were given the choice, would you choose a brand new white dot, or an older one (as in 1990 model)?
I’ve seen a lot of the newer ones cracking out around the holes pretty quickly, but I’ve got an old one I bought at a yard sale a while back for a quarter (yes, a quarter).
Which would you choose?

Track Spare+ or the Hammer Black Widow plastic.

Well my old white dot I had for more years than I can remember, must have been made of iron. The only reason I got rid of it was I dropped weight.
I have the Lime and Slime whitedot now which is a couple of years old and has a few cracks around the thumbhole. My girlfriend has a black/pink whitedot about 2yrs old broke out around the fingers.
Todays plastic balls are colorful and you can get some with a actual core. But they do seem to crack around the holes alot more.
I'm figuring on getting a new one soon, I'm dropping weight again. I'll get a today's ball, But I'll make sure to use a slug in the thumb. One's with slugs seem to do better around the tthumbhole (especially if you track close to the hole as I do).

True. How expensive is it to patch around the holes? If it's cheap and a durable fix go with what you have. I personally have a newer hammer widow spare with not too many games with this problem. I wouldn't buy another one until the quality come up... I'm hoping Brunswick does a spare ball with DOT to fix this.

Old white dots tended to be towards the middle of the spectrum hardness wise so I don't think it will matter much. The edge to older polyester was being able to get either super soft (Yellow Dot bleeders) or super hard (old Blue Dots over 90 hardness). I would probably look at getting something with a core though because its makes a difference for sure. I use the Pyramid Pathogen Blue Dot as my spare ball and can't recommend it enough and can get it for $75. It has a little lower diff than BW but a higher int diff to diff ratio also.

If you don't mind throwing a plugged ball I would use the old white dot.
I know of no advantage the new pancake weight block plastics would have over the old ones.

I can't speak to where they're made, but rumor had it they're up there on the hardness scale, Last clear poly ball I had was the Track Flaming T, and that never cracked.

I know Motiv makes their spare ball in the USA but its a polyester urethane blend. I thought 900 did too (why its significantly more expensive) but could be wrong.

The Hammer Tough is Polythane also

My understanding anything plastic not blended is made in two places. Neither are in the U.S.

If you want to throw for strikes, I'd use anything with a real core over a pancake, even the older "softer" ones. I've used a red XXXL (not exactly new, but not really old like the caramels) quite a bit over the years - all my spares and fantastic on short sport patterns). It has chipped around the thumb a decent amount, but not enough to plug and re-drill. For plastic, I'd put performance over brittleness - it's not like the entire ball cracks like resin.
