NFL Expansion to 17 Games
« on: March 31, 2021, 10:00:37 AM »
Yay or Nay????

I like the idea of 1 less preseason game and one more regular season game.  As I have gotten older, the preseason is becoming painful to watch from a fan perspective.  Most of us already know who the majority of the starters will be before the first preseason game.  Plus, out of the 16 quarters being played, the starters might play 5 or 6 of them.

The only thing I dont like is the fact there would be records that have stood for a lot of years that now have a more legitimate chance of being broken (Dickerson's rushing record and maybe the first 2000 yard receiving season just to name a couple).

I like that the NFL is trying to get creative to bring more excitement to the game.  What I would have liked to see is similar to what we have in bowling (having a position round before the playoffs start).  I know the league is setting it up where if you lead the division after the 16th game, you play a division leader from the previous season.  The reason I dont like that idea is this.  Lets use the Saints as a great example.  They won the division in 2020.  But now Brees retires, the GM is gone, and they have some significant injuries and the team now goes 8-8 this year.  They now get to play the Titans on the road.  The Titans dont have a whole lot of competition in their division this season (maybe Indy but that is without Philip Rivers).  Tennessee has the potential to go 6-0 in their division this season. To me that doesnt make sense; especially when Green Bay gets Kansas City for their 17th game.  I think they should have went division leader vs division leader during the current season and so on.

18 regular season games - no pre season. No pre season didn’t hurt any one last year.

Just my opinion.

Adding a game to the regular season is no big deal.  The players make an insane amount of money, and the fans pay an insane amount of money for tickets to the games and merchandise.  It all balances out.

I was friends with someone that was a former MLB player.  He always claimed the NFL is fixed/predetermined.  There are "storylines" the NFL likes to focus on, and certain players they like to draw attention to.  There are billions of dollars being generated and they very closely control the outcomes to preserve their profitability.

I have never been one to get wrapped up in the teams and players.  I watch the games purely for entertainment on Sunday afternoons.  There are guys at work that will literally spend the entire day on Monday doing a full recap of the games and will discuss specific plays that occurred during certain points, who had the most yardage, most rushing, worst rushing, which players are long-time friends from school and which players hate each other, who gets along with their coaches, who doesn't blah blah blah.  It's just too much.

I'm not a fan of the extended season. Those guys bodies are beat up so bad by the end of the year and another game isn't going to help that.

I would have been ok with them having another bye week during the year and had the 16 games played over 18 weeks.

Pre-season games they could cut them back to 2. The starters don't hardly play in any of those games anyway.

I think it is a greedy move to add a 17th game and that they are unnecessarily messing with a sport that is on top for viewers, sponsors, etc.

I dont think they should be adding the 17th game and they should kill thursday night games.  but the NFL only cares about players when they are being sued by them.

For me, what I dont like regarding bye weeks is they spread them out.  Why give some teams a bye after only 4 weeks and other teams have to wait until week 10?  I like the trade off of 1 less preseason game with one more regular season game.  However I agree with Pinbuster when he stated they could use a second bye week and go to 18 weeks.

I tend to agree a bit on that. The Steelers and Broncos have had a lot of calls "go their way" over about a 40 year period. The Pittsburgh/Seattle Super Bowl was fixed. Denver got to two Super Bowls via two of the worst calls in NFL history....Rob Lytle fumbled, and the Raiders recovered, yet they called it a TD....and in "The Drive" game, the Denver game winning FG was wide left.

in the seattle/pittsburgh game; the seattle QB threw and interception, went low to make a tackle and was called for an illegal chop block....
