No Grips?
« on: April 18, 2008, 09:47:04 AM »
I see a lot of ball pictures on here in which people don't have grips in their ball. The fingers are just drilled. What is the reasonin behind this? I would just think it would cause blisters and pain...

Acually there is less drag than grips because of a smoother suface. I get a more consistant rotation level and when I don't I am light instead of high. Also some conventional thought is you need less lift with reactives compared to the old rubber, plastic, urethane days where lift equaled carry. It is also cool to post 500 to 600 rpm on the cat system without them.

Not more RPM just more consistant with less lift. Also it is so much easier to flatten ball out at spares without rubber inserts. I posted a couple of 500 to 600 in 95 at Reno on the cat system. No way I could for a whole set but for 5 to 10 shots at max crank I pulled it off without grips.

Pchee might wear out the finger holes on a ball without grips, but I don't think the rest of us are in danger of doing so.

I used to hang up or hit up on the ball with grips, so I got rid of them.  I haven't used them in 15 or so years.  Every once in a while I get the itch to try them, but even if I liked it, that's a lot of balls to plug and re-drill.  That's also the reason I haven't drilled up anything 14#; I'm afraid I'd like them too much and have to replace everything.  As far as no grips go, there's nothing to wear out and I get a great feel with out them.  WAY too many people need to change out they're grips more often than they do.  Worn grips get bigger and can change your span.  Both things promote squeezing.  Mine are drilled oval (don't know if you can tell from the pictures in my profile), so they are the same shape as my fingers.

For me, I enjoy no finger inserts and I feel it allows me to come out cleaner. I never really like the "tack" of the inserts, and without them there is no worry about them wearing out or even paying for them, its a cheaper adventure for me that I enjoy.
