What exactly is an "action bowler"?
« on: October 27, 2003, 12:09:50 AM »
Am I to understand it is just someone who throws very hard with lots of revs but little hook?

I have heard of this lately but can find little solid information.

Thanks all!

An action bowler is someone like Pete Weber. A bowler able to pump up the crowd.

To me an “action bowler” is one who is always willing to bowl for money. Pot games, brackets, you name it.

In that past it went with a hustler as well.

An "action bowler" in this here neck of the country is one who bowls for $$$, such as in pot games, etc. In the past there were some fantastic "action bowlers" and "hustlers" in what were considered "major bowling towns" like NYC, Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, etc. Nowadays it is almost a lost art.

An action bowler is one that, for example, makes himself available for unofficial match play games, many times after hours, for all manner of money.

As an example, you walk in to the Bowlerama and say I will take on anyone for $100 a game.  Heard of many thousands of dollars passing hands this way.  It isn't as common as it used to be, although I may stand corrected in that.

I understand Rudy Revs will happily bowl action against anyone that wants to.

Aha!

Thanks for the info everyone... someone I know was talking a lot about Rudy "Revs" Kasimakis.

Got me thinking about the whole term and just wanted the clarification.

Thanks again!

action=$

Actually, since it more a thing of the past you will see more action happening amongst seniors than the young bucks nowadays. Guppy Troup comes to mind.

i was doing a search on rudy "revs" kasimakis a couple of days ago, and i came across an awesome article that was printed in esquire magazine back in 1999.  it's a good read on the lifestyle of an "action bowler", and very entertaining.

Loved the article.  Loved the proposition Rudy brought up for after the TV lights go out (i.e., Come on Walter, lets take it down the street and go one-on-one).

What about this.  During the PBA off-season, have a grudge match each week between pros that might have issues with one another.  Both bowlers have to put up some money, but sponsors have to kick in some cash to really make it interesting.  An example:  the Saturday after the last PBA show, showcase a match between Patrick Allen and Brian Himmler (pros that appear to have a bit of bad blood).  The next Saturday it could be, maybe, Mika and Mack.

Leaving the bowlers' microphones OFF might be a good idea.
