thumb issues...please help!
« on: August 28, 2003, 02:18:23 PM »
Does anyone know what might be causing the knuckle on my thumb to get tore up so badly? If I'm looking at the top of my thumb(rh), it would be at the lower left side of my knuckle...a sore spot about the size of a pencil eraser. This seems to come and go and I'm getting real tired of it. I'm guessing it has something to do with my thumb release being messed up, but wanted to know what you think. I've gone to my pro shop and asked them to re-drill my thumb with more reverse pitch, thinking this might help me to get out of there a little cleaner and quicker. Do you think this will help, and also, since I've never usued reverse pitch, is this going to be harder for me to get used to.

thanks Shane, right now i'm at 0, but i've tried forward pitch and it didn't help at all. I do like a semi-loose thumbhole though, only because if it isn't i hang up REALLY bad. I might grip the ball a little on accident sometimes, but if i do won't having a little reverse not make a difference or maybe help some?

Rverse pitches gets you out of the ball sooner. For those who have a problem with squeezing or hanging in the ball i usually request a little revers to see how much easier they can get out of the ball. For those who hae a tendency to lose thre ball in the backswing or lacks lift, then you go to more of a forward pitch in the thumb.

If you are gripping then forward pitch is the answer.  It will be more difficult at first because you are used to gripping it.

Using reverse pitch will only cover up your error because you can get your thumb out whilst gripping.

It would seem to me that you will first have to get a tighter thumbhole, get used to it, then start to add forward pitch.

Another thing that can cause this is your span. Too wide of span will cause you to squeeze the ball, so check your span.

Anytime that you have a sore spot on the top of your thumb you have to be bending your knuckle in the thumbhole. You can only do this if the thumbhole is too big.

If  you tighten the thumbhole up and  stick then your fit is not correct. Your span and/or pitches in the thumb are not what you need. A correct grip should allow you to have a clean release with a fairly snug thumbhole.

The easiest thing to check is the span. Put your thumb fully into the ball and lay your fingers across the finger holes. Don’t stretch your hand just lay your palm on the ball. The first knuckle, using a finger tip grip, should be at least 1/3 the way across the hole.

If the span is ok then I would start trying reverse pitch in the thumb and probably some right pitch (no more than a ¼” to start).

If you can find a proshop with an adjustable measuring ball have the various pitch’s put in the ball and throw the measuring ball in the air to the proshop owner to get a feel for what pitch works.  Be sure an keep the thumb as snug as possible.

Along the lines to this.

If your thumbhole is too big but when you go to the correct size it is tough to release your problem is probably incorrect bevel.

I've written an article on bevel in the drilling section titled "What Mo Pinel taught me on bevel". I thought what he told me was great!

You see I hated bevel.  Because any time I had it applied it was applied on both surfaces front and side equally.

But that's not how it works.  Front bevel helps you release and prevents bruising under the top joint of the thumb and prevents accidental lofting.
Side bevel prevents pulling.  Very often the amount of bevel that is proper for you should be different on these two surfaces.

Final.  Use the proper size.  If your thumb is oval use tape front and back.
Learn or find a pro who can apply the proper amount of bevel to each individual contact surface.

This is happening to me as we speak.  Went bowling last night with Brian (MichiganBowler, great guy too) and I have been having constant problems with a sore developing on the top of my thumb, just behind the joint.  I am visting my pro shop guy today or tomorrow to show him the evidence and see his thoughts, but I think it may be the thumbhole is too big.  Ive recently lost over 50 lbs the past year, and thats about when my problems started.  My thumb may have shrunk enough to where I am gripping the ball too much and gradually wearing on the skin.

Anyways I will let you know what my proshop guy says.  Hopefully it will help

Actually, the title to that topic was 'Beveling tips I just learned from Mo Pinel!', I believe.  Here is the link to that:

Now, excuse me while I go back and read it again.
