Looking Into Some New Equipment
« on: October 20, 2008, 07:51:09 AM »
Hey guys, I am looking to pick up two new pieces by Christmas.  Figured i would get some opinions and try and base my opinion off of that.  First off, I am in need of a heavy oil ball... something with a lot of roll, I really don't want a skid/flip piece.  My Rival used to fit the bill, but its seemed to lose a step or two over the past year.  I'm not really locked into one brand, so anything will help.  So far I've been considering three balls.  The LevRG, Dimension, and Cell in that order.  Any thoughts or opinions are welcome.

The second piece is a matter of length.  There is a house in my area that has extremely clean backends, and I just can't find a piece that gets far enough down the lane for me.  I don't want a ball that doesn't hook, I'm left handed, I have no problems getting through the heads. I just want something with a LOT of length, and a good pop on the backend.  I don't like the pancake weight blocks, so I'm not looking at a Scout, Rayzr, or Power Groove.  I've been considering a Tropical Storm, Avalanche Pearl, and Global 900 Link.  Any suggestions?

I don't have a video at the moment, but I do have one laying around on my laptop, maybe I'll post it up if you want to get an idea of my bowling style.  Thanks a lot guys.

Personally, I'd go with the CELL or the NVD. The NVD really is an underrated ball for some reason (maybe it's just underrated here in California?)

For your lighter ball, I'd go with the Av. Pearl. I love the ball, and it's something that you can move and play straighter or deeper if you have to. If you get locked in with a Rayzr or Tornado, Trop. Storm, etc...(entry level, which are all great balls to have) you may have trouble with versatility. I'd go to the Av. Pearl because then you'll be able to use it for what you want to, but you'll also be able to use it somewhere else in your arsenal.

I'd personally go more in the direction of the Dimension or Cell, as Morich's super strong asymmetrical cores can get a bit condition-specific for me (they're either carrying everything and give me tons of room, or I have zero miss room and corner pins galore).  I personally have both a Dimension and a Cell with very different drills that both love oil, but can still perform and carry amazingly well when the shot starts to dry up.  Very versatile pieces.

Now, for your other situation, it sounds like you're on a shorter, lower volume shot combined with fresh backend.  You have two issues then:  controlling the backend without sacrificing carry.  You may want to take something like a Neptune and pin the pin under the fingers or go with a pin axis type drill, and you may even need a little surface to keep it from snapping too hard when it finds friction.  (I personally almost never see this kind of condition, so I may not be the best qualified to give answers about it, just FYI!)

I'd say you have a good idea right now.

For the Heavy Oil slot i'd go with either the Cell or Dimension, all depending on if you prefer assymetrical or symmetrical cored equipment.

On the Lighter End the Emerald Vibe is a real good ball for the price, it gets down the lane with ease and makes a strong move for me, needs some help to get going at points, and it is much weaker than my cherry vibe. The Tropical Storm is very similar, though a bit stronger from what i've seen.

Layout wise i'd suggest of course, drill a strong ball strong and a weaker ball weaker, just my rule of thumb.

for the heavy i would go with the Cell, Dimension, or even 900 Global Break S75.
they are all good heavy oil pieces.

as for something with good length and pop i would say go with the Neptune, pin down with the polish knocked off slightly.

I think my girlfriend may have picked up a Cherry Vibe for our one year anniversary.  Think this ball is too much?  I've always said I wanted it, but I kinda think it might be too aggressive for what I'm looking for.  What if I throw a weaker drilling on it?

The Cherry Vibe could work, just keep it at least at 4000, maybe polished, and drill it pin up. There's your light oil.

And I recommend this ONLY for the extremes.  I tend to side more with using a lower-flaring layout with surface for medium to medium-heavy conditions with a stronger ball, and then being careful to not use too weak a drill on a lighter oil to help even out the reaction and make it less oil-allergic.  From my experience, this tends to give you more versatile equipment that rolls consistently and predictably while still retaining energy downlane for good carry.
