Two ball bowler
« on: August 15, 2006, 01:29:53 AM »
Given my current average (158) I don't think I need to bring an arsenal with me to the lanes. Last year was my first year to bring more than one ball. Anyway, was wondering everyones opinion on the subject. If you're only bringing two balls, is one automatically going to be a plastic (spare) ball or will it be two reactive balls with different drillings/coverstock and such. I really want to get better at the 7 & 10 pin shooting with plastic this year. In the past I've tried to just get behind my (Storm Deuce) ball and roll straight at them, but really think it would be better to use the plastic. I'm not very accurate when throwing with my hand behind the ball, but I do see a lot of guys at the lane that do so, and not use a spare ball. What's the "in" method? Thanks!

I'd go with a plastic ball.  That way my release is consistent and its one less thing to worry about.  The only problem is that if you have a lot of hand in the ball then then plastic can still hook on drier patterns.  I've had my plastic turn on me the last second on dry patterns when trying to knock out the 7 pin (lefty).

Yeah, that was gonna be my next question. What does everyone do, if anything, to maintain their plastic balls. Just clean and car polish/wax? We want'em slippery, right?

2 balls to league 75% of year, as end of season rolls around bring plastic and one other for alternate lines. I sand my plastic down and then light polish, giving an earlier read and less skid incase of small puddles in the backend.

I am not sure what the "in" method is.  My thinking is that I don't want to change my release really since I am trying to get more consistent with my release.  Therefore, I can spin a plastic right at the pin and it won't hook.  Whether or not I throw it to the right spot is another story completely.  However, at the same time you could roll a reactive perfectly straight if you released it that way.  It seems to me that if you get a plastic, you can use that for spares in any lane condition because it takes the lane condition out of the equation.

For my plastic, I clean it with Track Powerwash and polish it using this "Control It" stuff.

That's why people use plastic balls for spares.

If your goal is to get better at shooting 7- and 10-pin spares with your plastic ball then that's what you should bring.  If your goal is to learn to flatten your release to throw your reactive ball at spares then bring two reactives.

I wet sand mine with 4000 abralon. Actually, every once in a while I take it down to 180 abralon on a spinner and work it all the way up to 4000 abralon.

I did this a first becasue it is a clear ball. I wanted to make it look good again but, I found out it made it stratghter in the process.

If you re into serious bowling and if you play the hook, I'd always consider a polyester spare ball. Even if you get along without one, having one at hand takes out many oil issues while spare shooting, epecially in foreign territory.

In fact, I consider the spare the most important ball in the arsenal. I'd rather buy a polyester than a 2nd reactive. Will surely raise your average.

For polyester maintenace, there is not much to do. It does not suck up oil, I only do some light sanding and a fresh polish every now and then when the track area becomes dull. These things are quite durable.

I don't use a spare ball because I don't like a different feel, it messes me up. You can pick up 10's or 7's fine with flattening out your wrist and throwing hard and straight. That's what I do anyways.

See that's what I am saying.  Everyone prefers to do it a different way.  There is no right way or wrong way.  I would say at least try one because they are pretty cheap.

I agree.  I used to use plastic to shoot at my 7 pin, but I didn't like having the different feel.  I learned (still learning) how to flatten out my main ball to pick up the corner pin.

I worked with my ball driller for a minute and he showed me a way.  The very next day I went and shot 710 with a clean series, picking up 6 Seven Pins.  I have tweaked it a little to feel more comfortable for me, and it's a work in progress.  Although I feel a lot more confident when I leave one.

I've used a two ball arsenal, and its much better for your avg to have a plastic ball.

I guess it comes down to whether or not you want to adapt to a changing release with consistent feel, or same release with an inconsistent feel.  Though my personal opinion is that I wouldn't risk throwing my strike ball at a 7 pin in fear that it has a lot more hook potential than a plastic.  Which reminds me, I need to polish up my spare, its starting to hook.

I do not use plastic, it's too much of a pain.  There are so many balls on the return that I have to keep taking one off. Because the 210 plus bowlers are not going to take there extra ball off.  So I have learned to use my reactive for spares.  But in your situation I would take a reactive and a plastic, at least until you can average 175 plus, then I would consider a third ball.  I recently told my wife she couldn't take a third ball until she got her average to 165.
