wrist devices
« on: May 15, 2014, 12:38:50 PM »
It seems that Asians in Asia and here in Northern California all seem to big buyers and users of wrist devices like the storm gadget types. I wonder how popular these devices are around the country.

Are these users having their grip measured with the device on? I see so many people use these devices and still their release really didn't change. In fact, in some cases, their release got worse. I guess to some it's more comfort too.

(I've tried the gadget for two to three months when I hurt my wrist. But I sold it and worked on healing my wrist and strengthing it instead. Now, I'm actually throwing a pound up with no problems.)

I used to use a Mongoose for many years and forced myself to not use it.  Went without it for a couple years but I noticed that I have a hard time being consistent with my release.  I would end up moving my wrist and turning the ball and what not.  I recently went back to the brace and have been much more consistent and my average went up.  Because I wasn't doing funky wrist movements, my revs went up and the ball roll was more consistent.  I don't have weak wrists, just can't stop it from moving around.
Yes, in Asian.    8)

Xrayjay,

Can you tell me how to strengthen your wrist?  I can only bowl on one league because of it.  My weak wrist is prolly from years of machine operating.  Now I'm a teacher  ;D ;D ;D

Be as specific as possible.

First, I bowled less games overall, got plenty rest. A friend of mine is a PT and she gave me some exercises to do. Here's a link similar to what she showed me.

For wrist strength exercises I did wrist rolls..... You've probably seen this technique before. Basically, all you need: a stick (like a broom stick 1.5" thick or thicker) about 1.5 ft long, a strong thin rope, and 5lb weight. Tie the weight with the rope at one end and tie the other end to the center of the stick.

Then, just like engaging the throttle on a motorcycle, roll the weight all the way up and then all the way down with arms extended slightly bent, palm side down. and pref in a "horse/sumo" stance.  Focus on technique and importantly focus on your core. I'm pretty sure someone post on Youtube on how to do this exercise.

Years ago I started with a Mongoose then ended up with a Pro Release which I still have. Used it up until a few months ago.  For me I used it to cut down on my hook.  It won't let you unload your wrist.

I never had my grip measured with or without it. But I didn't use the finger strap very tight very often. That might make a difference.  Took a few weeks to get used to not using it.  Decided to make myself play deeper again and not so much down and in. Kinda fun swinging the ball.

They don't seem to be as popular in my area as they used to be.
