Title: Oval Grips with nubs
Post by: thewhiz on October 12, 2017, 01:02:30 AM
Went to these trips about two months ago.  When I finish bowling my fingers are sore.  Not from them rubbing on the nubs but just stiff and sore.  Anyone ever have any problems with these grips  hurting your fingers.  Do the nubs increase your span.  Maybe that's the problem.

When you say nubs, which are your referring too?

The powerlift style grips that add forward pitch to the fingers?

Or the straight inserts that just have little nubs for grip?

If it's the powerlift style finger inserts, most likely your fingers are sore because you changed your grip specs by using them.

They add about 1/8"-1/4" forward pitch to your holes, also when using them you really should adjust your span (though most don't) because they stretch span slightly.

Also you should make sure to line them up properly with your finger pads.

Vise has an insert called a semi that has a "bump" inside the insert, rather than at the end.  I wonder if this is what you're referring to.  We have lots of bowlers who think they are more comfortable.

Either way, it's not a bad idea to get the span and pitches checked because our hands change over the years of bowling.  It could also be the start of arthritis in those joints (due to wear and tear over time).  I have some in those fingers from 20+ years of bowling.  On those days when it's painful I try to remember to take some ibuprofen an hour before league to help.  Arthritis in a "new" spot is especially painful, but usually gets somewhat less after some time passes.  Those of us who bowl for years should expect this problem, and feel extremely lucky if you avoid it.

Is there swelling on the top of the joints, or do they seem to be losing some flexibility?   If you've bowled for several years I'd be willing to bet on the arthritis thing, but an x-ray should reveal it starting in case you really want to know.  Hopefully you don't have any ligament damage because that can take awhile to heal since we're always bowling...

I've seen the type grips you're talking about, I don't like them.  Flip the grips over so the nubs are on your finger nails to see if it's the nubs that are causing the pain.  --  JohnP

They are just the ones with the little nubs.  Does not add any forward pitch to my fingers.  I do have a little bump on top of my middle finger right on the joint.  I will ask my Dr. When I see him.  I will try some different lifts and talk to my Dr and pso and go from there.

Sounds like different inserts than I talked about earlier.  Yours are like "treads" inside the grip, correct?  I believe they are the Quad 2 by Turbo, and I didn't care for them.

The bump on the top of the joint may be the dreaded arthritis I was referring to.  The middle finger is often first because most bowlers "pull" harder with that finger as they rotate, etc.

Vise makes an oval insert with nubs, and they only come in one color, grape.  I have used them intermittently without problems. Some friends of mine didn't like them because they claimed the nubs wore off too quickly; this was not the case for me.

So if you use the vise oval/power oval grip would your span change depending on which way you put the grip in?  Also is there a huge difference between the sides of the grip?  Basically which end you put up.
