Title: Over the counter meds
Post by: dogman666 on March 03, 2006, 12:41:59 AM
I've got serious pain in my bowling shoulder and wondered if some of the older members could steer me to some over the counter meds that seem to work for them.

If you have serious pain, you need to go have it checked out. I get some stiffness and such in my bolwing shoulder after 6 games of traveling leauge, but after a few hours and 2 Advil, the pain is gone..

I'm going to assume that you would know if it was necessary to see a medical professional and would do so if you need to.

That said, if you don't have any negative physical reactions to NSAIDS (the drug class containing aspirin, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, and naproxen sodium) you could try one of those, following label instructions.  The different types of drugs in that class should not be mixed--you need to pick one.

If you want to try topical ointments of the Ben-Gay variety, I'd look for one that has cayenne in it.  Most of them contain menthol and camphor--the ones that also contain cayenne work best for me.

Don't risk injury, though...if you think you need to see a doctor, do it.

I would imagine it's arthritis.  My brother (7 years older) has had both knees replaced and both shoulders so I guess it's in the cards for me also.

Funny you should say that...that remedy works for me as well

On edit, and back to a serious level...there is a reason pitchers ice their arms down after even short stints.  I was outside the UT softball complex last night when Cat Osterman was leaving and she had a couple of huge bags of ice strapped on- one at the elbow and one at the shoulder.  And all she had thrown was the equivalent of an inning in front of a tour group.  Some of us got to talking after they had seen that, and they asked whether bowlers ever had to do that, and while most don't, it probably would not be a bad idea to do so given that the motions share some characteristics.

This is a repost. I use this on my shoulder, knee and wrist.
Works well. I would have your shoulder checked out by a medical professional...
just to be safe. I'm 59 and bowl 30+ games a week, and experience some tendonitis.
Works well for me.

This is the web site that I found the information on: http://home.iae.nl/users/lightnet/health/messages/ginger.html

There is also an article (non-drug approaches for bowling-related injuries) in the March 2005 BTM magazine, on Page 16.

I bought about 10 ginger roots, and put them in a food processor, rather than grating...Hand grating, took a long time, the grater clogged with fiber.
I separated the ginger into 2-3 inch balls, put them into freezer bags, and froze them. They keep very well.

Follow the instructions on the web site . . . or

Make sure you have heavy-duty rubber glover to handle the towels and ginger!
The water has to be pretty HOT for the remedy to work!

Fill a pot with approx. a gallon of water, put a ball of the ginger into a large linen handkerchief. Tie a length of string around the 4 corners of the hanky to tie the corners together. When the water starts boiling shut the heat off. Put the handkerchief into the pot, with the end of the string hanging outside. Put a cover over the pot, let it steep for 5 minutes. PUT ON YOUR GLOVES! Put 2 towels inside the pot. Let them soak, remove one towel, wring the excess water out of the towel, and apply it on the painful / stiff area. You mat need a partner to help with this. Make sure you do not burn your skin...The water has to be pretty hot, but make sure you don't burn your skin. If your skin hurts or turns bright red, stop immediately. Use common sense.

I accidentally found a remedy for my finger and toe joints, by using the handkerchief itself, full of the ginger root....I am not religious, but I would have to say the outcome after applying the ginger to my finger joints (which were almost frozen (unbendable), was close to miraculous...after 10 minutes my fingers were pain free and were moveable. DO NOT USE GINGER COMPRESSES ON BLISTERED OR OPEN WOUNDS, SORES. ALSO, SEE A PHYSICIAN, AND HAVE A PROFESSIONAL DIAGNOSIS OF YOUR PERSONAL CONDITION.

Hope this helps...Just be careful with the hot water.

Alleve, really helps with Arthritic pains.
I can't take NSAIDS drugs, because of a medical condition. Alleve works great.

Mumzie-
I went to your website, and then the site for the product you are selling.  I signed up to receive a free sample quite a while ago, but it has yet to show up.  Just thought I'd let you know.

Duke-
I tried that remedy for shoulder bursitis a while back.  It didn't seem to do much for me, but that's probably because I couldn't stand the towel being too hot and I let it cool down too much.  I will try it again soon.

Besides OTC pain relievers, I would highly recommend a product called Penetran Plus.  I stumbled across it at a local health food/supplement store.  It's a topical rub.  It has worked remarkably well for all types of pain I get.  It works immediately and lasts for quite awhile.

Mumzie--Is that your website?  That is the very product that I use!  That stuff works great for me.  I know it mostly by the name of its parent company--Sombra.  I've been using it on an as-needed basis for years.  I have some in my locker at work and at home.  I purchased some directly from the company, and then when I tried to do that again, they had stopped selling direct to customers and recommended going through a medical professional, so I had a chiropractor friend get it for me.  If that's your site, I'll order it from you.

Duke--I hate to tell you this, but Aleve is naproxen sodium and it is an NSAID.

http://www.drugs.com/aleve.html

My wife tends to have a reaction to NSAIDs--she can hear her heartbeat if she takes them--so she needs a prescription pain-reliever for her arthritis for the times when acetaminophen (Tylenol) won't do the job.

Your ginger recipe looks promising.  I'm going to pass that along to my wife.  She likes ginger anyway and usually has some in the house.

Shiv,
Thanks for posting that info. My pharmacist recommended Alleve, and said it was safe for me to use. I have ARMD and most of the others in my family have it.
My sister lost her sight 3 months ago, after surgery. Docotr told her to take ibuprofen, which she did. The ibuprofen caused her retinal arteries to bleed, which advanced her macular degeneration into the neovascular-type (wet ARMD) of the disease.
She lost 80% of her sight.

I'm very leary of taking any medication. I'll cross Alleve off my list.

Duke--

I'm glad my post was useful to you.  It sounds as if Aleve could potentially worsen your eye condition.  I hope you are coping well with your macular degeneration.  My mother developed macular degeneration in her late 60s, became very embittered and would not be talked into doing anything that could help ease her life.  Her ophthalmologist told her she should make an appointment at the Low Vision Clinic of the Kresge Eye Institute--which her insurance would have covered--but she wouldn't do it.

Dogman although I may not be one of the older members here I have been dealing with enough pain in the bowling shoulder.  I had surgery on my shoulder in middle Dec.  They did a labrum resection from the rupture out the back of the joint at the scapula(shoulder blade0.
Few things that I have been doing for the past year going through the pain before and after surgery.
Before going down to the bowling alley I use heat on the shoulder for 30 minutes to help get the muscles tendons and all warm and loose.  After getting too the alley and set up I do milded stretching.  I also take a Ibuprophen base otc.  While bowling I keep a heavy terry cloth towel with me and fold it and keep it over the shoulder to keep the heat in also keeping the heat in the joint while I am bowlin.  I have had to use a 14lb ball for the last 3 years do to this being the second surgery on the same arm.  ( NO Bowling is not the cause.)  Once done with bowling and get to my car I have a ice pack waiting so I don't get the swelling after the use.  My doc has actually helped me set this up as he found with me that bowling is why it took him close to a year to find the full tear in the labrum and didn't know where it was tell he got inside.   Hope this helps

Shiv,

I was disgnosed at the age of 56. I probably had early stages when I was 50, which is young. I can't read street signs, or print, unless it's fairly large.
I went through a period of denial and depression. I now have a more positive outlook on things. I've seen a low vision specialist, and I know there are options, for the future when my vision worsens.

Taking it a day at a time.

Again, thanks for the heads up on the Aleve.

Above may come useful.
We have been using this stuff in Asia for at least a few generations.
Most homes have them as a goto medication and now available in the western world about 10 years ago.

Further to my earlier post.
For anyone who have been to Singapore, they would have known or heard of "Aw-Par Villa"
It's a theme park.
IIRC their fortune came from "Tiger Balm."

First time I was there I was 11 years old with my grandmother. Last time was 10 years ago with my son.
