I think I'm a reverse House Bowler
« on: August 12, 2003, 06:20:53 PM »
For some reason, I can't hit my on house.  For the past few years my average has been around 220 in that house.  Last year, I was down to 216 there.  I've been bowling all summer in several tournaments out of town and have really worked on my game but can't score big there.

Years ago, it seemed everyone bowled better at home and was below their average in strange houses.  I don't believe that today.

It seems like my best angle to hit the pocket there isn't a very good percentage of carry.  I can hit the pocket all night and not score due to corner pins.

In the last few weeks I've bowled in several tournaments out of town and have averaged over 230, yet last night in league, I shot 644.

The shot on the left is good and there is another lefty that out averages me in that house but he doesn't fair very well out of town.  My high set in league there last year was about 750 but I had maybe 10 series over 770 in other houses.

I'd say I average 6 to 8 seven pins a set which doesn't do much for your score

Anyone else have this problem?

I can agree with that to. I avg. 195 @ my home alley but having been shoting a 215-220 clip in tourneys. I just can't seem to knock all ten pins down. I am always leaving a backrow pin are a 7-10 pocketsplits. I just think our pins a way offspot.

Hose...when you are going elsewhere, you are more apt to pick up on the little things sooner and make the adjustments.  Complacency sets in on house shots. I'd wager that is what you are encountering...

michelle,  I was thinking that same thing.  It's not like I don't try to strike on every shot and I try to make a good shots.  For some reason, I just don't seem very sharp there.  Another thing could be the 5 man team.  I don't bowl many tournaments where you throw one ball then don't throw another one for 10 or 12 minutes.

The shot is wide open, I have the oil line at 11 and have tug area as well as a few boards out to hit the pocket.  I just don't seem to get a good angle to get great carry.

I'd rather shoot on a tough shot and carry the shot I should and shoot 660 rather than 720 on an easy shot and not carry.

For the longest time I couldn't carry, I left ringing 10 pins swish 7-10's 4-9's solid 9 pins. I just couldn't past 3 in a row. I'd hit the pocket 8-9 times per game and just shoot low 200's. (I'm an out of the box thinker) I decided to go to a much weaker ball and now I started to carry everything. I think what has happened is that the new oiling machines really do a good job of cleaning the backends. The combination of strong equipment and clean backends just over powers the pins. The pins are thrown around in such weird angles that it just doesn't carry. The pins don't fall in its proper pin path.( hope you understand what I'm trying to say). Stronger equipment doesn't always help carry. You've seen it before some guy throws a much weaker ball and just bing bangs the pocket all night and out scores the power player.

On weaker equipment I did a nice job last week with a Tornado on medium carrydown.  Starting beaten up on em as the night progressed!

But in general out house has been corner pin city for me for a year.
One night 31 flush smash mouth pocket hits with 19 seven pins!!!!!
Eiiiiiiehhhh!

And then I missed some, also I think I missed nearly every 10 pin and 6 pin spare I shot at for the year!  My average is the pits!

Yet when I go to different lanes around here, either all synthetic or all wood my average skyrockets!  (our home house is synthetic and wood).

Recently went to Virginia and bowled with some guys with averages 25 pins higher than me.  They knew they were in big trouble from the get go.

All summer I've been struggling on my home house shot. And I mean STRUGGLING - average is down to 192 or so.
Last night - I went in, and pretended to be bowling a tournament - put on my REAL thinking cap, and played the lane in a different area than usual for league. Shot my highest series for league for the summer. The lanes played really different - but seemed REALLY easy last night.
So complacency could very well be your problem - I know it was mine.
