Bowling Rack

For those that have taken the time to build their own bowling rack at home, any tips? What did you use for railings, ends, measurements? Just looked at one online for 15 balls and I'm thinking he used 1x6's for the railings and 2x10's for the end posts. Also anyone spray paint theirs and have any issues?

Here's a rack I built a while back for a few friends for 12 balls, with 1 1/4" oak dowels and  1" x4" & 1"x6" poplar boards.





They can be made simpler and cheaper with just 1"x6" and 2"x4"s pine boards.

I bought one from a local center that closed. Got a Peru e of history.  Looks to have like atleast 6 coats of paint on it. 

I miss bowling there every time I see the rack

We screwed a couple of these into the wall against which it was placed. That made it even more stable.

I built one with using 2x4's and a couple of 2x6's for the ends.  Total cost of about $18 and mine will hold 20 balls.

If you're going to make it wider than mine (36"), you need 2x4s mounted sideways to safely hold the weight.

You should put up a picture to help someone get an idea how to use this heavier lumber to build a bigger one.

I bought one like this and use ball cups.  I can store anything else along with bowling balls.  Each shelf holds about 300 lbs.

Jeff, obviously, has some talent with woodworking, but I'd have to buy all the tools and materials, which would cost more than mine would be worth.  Besides, I might lose a finger using power tools that I haven't used in years. ;)

Those are the ones i built for friends. I have far too many to be building such small, "delicate" racks for myself. This is the monstrosity I use:
(12/1: My hard disk crashed as I was typing this.  Will finish when my PC is repaired. The picture is on that PC, not the one with which I am typing this note.)

My dad built a rack with two shelfs some time ago.
It's not enough, but at least a few of our balls have room there.
It's mostly the balls we don't use that goes there.
Like Roto Grip Sinister, Jackal and a few of his balls.

When I get my own place I'll need a rack, and I'll probably either make shelfs that are long or have more shelfs.
