Help with dropping the ball
« on: March 30, 2009, 01:14:16 PM »
ok i can't seem to stop dropping the ball for some reason, i have tried putting the towel on the lane and lofting over it and it worked for a little while as it was there, but now i am still dropping the ball. Anybody have some simple solutions to try and remedy this problem? I appreciate it thanks!

My guess with the information you provided is that you need to tighten up the thumb hole with white bowlers tape in the front of the thumb hole and if you still drop the ball leave the white tape in place and add black tape to the back side of the thumb hole, one strip at a time until you don't drop the ball.

You may need to take your ball back to the pro shop. Have them look at your pitches. Tell them you are dropping the ball. Also will be helpful to them if you tell them whether it is dropping off the thumb or fingers. There is a posibility that there is a release problem but sounds to me like a pitch problem.

As others have said, probably a pitch problem.  I was reverse and dropped the ball consistently.  I finally started working with a coach who believed in fixing the pitches first.  he got me on the road to forward thumb pitch.  Ron Clifton had me continue the journey and I'm now at 5/8 forward and no more dropping the ball.

Thanks to all for the input, i am trying to work on my release, i will try some tape first cuz my thumb holes are a bit big, and i'll go from there.

Profile didn't say how old you are.  If you're younger, maybe your span has changed.  But sometimes we open our thumb hole a little too much so it feels pretty good when we first start, then as we bowl our thumb shrinks a little and now the thumb hole is too large.  Some bowlers thumb shrink when they bowl, some thumbs get larger.  So tape is a good start but as others have said, having your pitches checked wouldn't hurt if the tape doesn't work.

i used to sit the ball down short all the time, killed the power and revs. could not get it out like you. got a deeper knee bend and kept my elbow straight as long as i could and reached down the lane. pulled my arm thru the shot and didn't break my elbow till my bicep was beside my head. it got me lofting the ball about 4-5' down the lane with alot more revs and lift and my accuracy improved too. if the thumb is snug enough, try this too, it helped me immensely.
