Confusing Tournament Rule
« on: March 17, 2007, 01:18:35 PM »
I am going to be bowling in a tournament tomorrow morning, and am having a hard time figuring out one of the rules.

The tournament is a handicap tournament (80% based on 210) and there are 2 divisions.  A scratch division and a handicap division.  The top 4 bowlers from each division after 4 games qualify for a "TV-type" stepladder elimination final round.

The rule I can't figure out is written as follows:

"Entrants are automatically entered in both scratch and handicap divisions.  Bowlers will be placed in the highest qualifying division.  If bowler qualifies in both divisions, they will be placed in the scratch division."

What is this rule trying to say?

If the handicap is based on 210, then bowlers averaging 210+ will obviously be in the scratch division.  Bowlers under 210 will be getting handicap, but that means they will be in both the handicap and scratch divisions, and ultimately in the scratch division?!?!?!

Can anyone figure this one out?

Thanks!

When you bowl you are competing in both divisions. Which ever division you have the higher ranking in will be the one you compete in for the stepladder.

Say you avg 210 and you shoot 700 for 3 games.

You are the 2nd high scratch and the high with handi you will be competing for the handicap championship.

if you are the high in both thaen you compete in the scratch.whether you are a 170 avg or a 220 avg.

Hope this helps

Thanks!  Now it makes sense.

I wonder what happens if the Top 4 scratch division bowlers are also the Top 4 in the handicap division?  Would the 5th - 8th place handicap bowlers then end up being the Top 4 handicap qualifiers?

Wouldn't it be easier just to keep the scratch bowlers in the scratch division and the handicap bowlers in the handicap division?  Especially considering there are separate prize lists for both divisions.

typically when i bowled tournaments that worked like this, handicap was always the first division u went into.  Even if u had 0 handicap, u went in the handicap side if u were high enough to be on the list.  The scratch side was almost always the lower sets bowled.  This helped thin out the handicap side, giving a bit more of an advantage to people actually bowling well, vs people with tons of handicap.

Basically, if a 170 average bowler shoots say....650 scratch, & roughly 760 handicap.  If for some reason the handicap sides cut is 761+ but the scratch side is under 650, he will make the scratch side.

As for a scratch bowler, if his scratch 750 beats all handicappers, he will definately lead the handicap side, leaving 4 full spots to go into the finals from the scratch board.

IMO best case scenario is that the handicap board is full of the top 4 scratch bowlers, & the scratch board is the next 4 scratch bowlers.  That way no matter who wins, its a better bowler, & definately not a sandbagger.
