Bought new ball tonight!
« on: October 01, 2007, 12:58:47 PM »
I have been reading on this forum and asking quite a few questions pertaining to differant bowling balls.  If you have read any of my posts, I stated I have returned to bowling after about a 5 year absence.  My old ball had a crack in it, so I have been using one that was about 15 years old(didnt take me long to remember why I quit using it! :-( ).                                                                                 Anyway, I finally had time to travel the 50 miles to a pro shop in a larger city, talked to the person running the shop(wasnt a pro, by the way), decided on getting the Black Widow Pearl.  I am a full roller, so he drilled it accordingly.  He took all the measurements, rechecked himself, seemed to be very through(I have never used this person before).  After completing the drilling, found out he drilled the thumbhole WAY to large.  I normally use some tape due to my unusually flat thumb, but no amount of tape was going to fix this!  He drilled it out, and installed a thumb slug.  Redrilled, and this time was tighter, he kept sanding, grinding, ect. until we had a somewhat comfortable fit, so I went and threw a few balls.  First ball slipped, so he put in one piece of tape.  Second ball was better, but he thought I needed another piece of tape.  Third ball was much better, but he still said I looked like I was dropping it a bit, so he put in another piece of tape.  I could tell this was a little snug, so I took it real easy on my release, and promptly tore a piece of skin on my knuckle.  Done practicing for me!  He appologized, and said he thought it should have been drilled right.  He sanded a bit more where the ball took the skin off and left it at that.  I told him I would try it this week if my thumb healed up, and if it wasnt right I would come back for adjustment.                                                                         I have always had trouble getting a thumbhole drilled so it fit properly, thus I just normally got one larger than needed and kept applying tape.  I was reading in another thread about gripping the ball with your thumb, which supposedly is a no no.  I'm sure that is what I did(and do), and I even told the guy when I grip the ball, is when it rubs on the back of my thumb joint.  How do you keep from gripping with your thumb?  I think if I applied enough tape so the ball felt secure without gripping, I would never release from the thumbhole?

The answer to your tape problem is Magic Carpet. http://www.bowl4fun.com

You do grip with your thumb, you just don't bend it at the knuckle.  You grip with the front side, in the area between the base and the knuckle.  I'm sure some folks are going to respond, saying they don't grip at all with their thumb.  They may think this, but they're using some grip pressure.  And No Open Tenths is right, Magic Carpet is a great product.  I use it in all my equipment.  But if you do "knuckle" the ball it will blister the back side.  --  JohnP

I think it is how the person drilled this thumbhole, as part of the problem! I'm sitting here trying the thumbhole on my old ball that is cracked and it fits very nicely, snug, but thumb pulls out when I roll it across the floor.  The new one doesnt fit quite right, which makes me grip it,(knuckle?) and I can feel the backside of my knuckle rubbing(which is where the skin peeled off).  Think best thing to do is take the old cracked ball with me in a couple of days and have him redrill the thumbhole so it's more like the old cracked ball.  I took a ball with me, one I have had to use(as my favorite old one was cracked), and this particular ball had plenty of tape in the thumbhole.

Long post... try breaking ones like that up into paragraphs please.  You'll get more replies if people don't feel it's a chore to read your posts.

If you are happy with the thumb in your old ball, take it with you and see if the shop is able to duplicate it.  Some shops have the ability to make exactacated thumbs (thumb molds) so that every thumb is exactly the same.

Could be that the pitches are off as well. You may want to go more forward with your thumb pitch so you do not have to apply the death grip to hang on to the ball. Single best adjustment I have made in the last 3 years was moving to forward thumb pitch. I don't drop the ball like I used to, and revs come so much more naturally with a relaxed grip. At least have him check your thumb pitch to make sure that new ball does not have any more reverse pitch than the old (comfortable) ball.

This also sounds to me as the issue...

Let my thumb heal up for a couple of weeks(plus I have been busy planting wheat), but yesterday I found the time to take the ball back to the pro shop.

Person removed the thumb slug and installed a new one.  I took my old cracked ball that had the great fit, and he measured off of it.  He really spent quite a bit of time, grinding, tapering, sanding, the thumbhole so it was pretty dang close to what I had in the old ball.  Much more comfortable fit, I threw a few frames and it felt ok(I may have to add a few pieces of tape, as it did slip, just a bit)

I will put it to the test on Thursday to see how it will do, at least I am confident I won't tear a chunk out of my thumb like before.  Thanks for the comments!

If your thumb is really flat, you could try an oval insert.  Make sure to get it aligned properly before it's glued in.  I don't think you can do quite as much with it once it's in (tough to open up an oval with a round bevel sander) but that might work for you.

You could also fake it with tape.  Take one piece of tape and cut it into two piece, 1/3 and 2/3 in width.  Stack your 1/3, 2/3, and a whole piece of tape together and put that in the thumb hole to create a flat spot.  I don't know if it'll work for the back of the thumb hole but you can definitely do it on the front edge.  One thing I don't like about using a lot of tape is that it tends to close up the side of the hole as well as the front or back and looking at my thumb, I think that only closing up the front or back edge is a better idea.
