Title: Places to bowl in RTP, NC
Post by: r534me on June 25, 2012, 12:52:01 PM
I am going there for a week and i wondering if I should bring a ball or two to bowl in the evenings.  I don't think I will have a car.  Can I cab around to the various bowls?

Thanks.

There are several bowling centers in the RTP area. With a more specific area I could give you better more detailed info.

Here is a quick list of ones in the Raleigh area.
6701 Fayetteville Rd. Raleigh, NC 27603
5900 Oak Forest Drive Raleigh, NC 27616
151 High House Rd. Cary, NC 27511
301 Nottingham Drive Cary, NC 27511
4508 Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd. Durham, NC 27707
5501 Commercial Ave. Raleigh, NC 27612

The first 3 is a set of family owned bowling centers. The last 3 are AMF houses. I am sure there are more in the area.

The 2 closest to RTP will both be AMF houses. Both are run well, as we run pro shops in both centers. AMF Pleasant Valley is the nicest looking bowling center in the Triangle area, and AMF Durham will be the closest.

There are a few other bowling centers in the area, but they are strictly designed for corporate parties (Mardi Gras in Chapel Hill) and the high end boutique type bowling center (Sparians, Raleigh).

If you have any other questions, let me know!

I normally dont open bowl when I do its half price. I would expect it to be $3-4 a game in the evening time.

Considering I am flying in from the SF Bay Area I wil pay the going rate to try out the lanes.  :)

It looks like I will need a rent car because the cab ride from the hotel will be very expensive.  I can rent a car for a day or two and drive around after work.  At least, I hope I will be able to.

If you come to AMF Durham Lanes before 8 PM, make sure you stop in to the pro shop... they might have some free game passes. Thursday night is a full house until 8:30 or so...

What are the best nights to go?  I might look to reserve a car one or two days.  My team lead has a car already but I don't think he's a bowler.

thanks.  What is the lane surface there?  I imagine it would be HPL but one never knows.  I thinking of what ball to bring.  Because of the short patterns here and my adversion to playing really deep I have been using urethane lately.

Thanks.

I' won't try to answer your question since I think improvement on prior responses it quite impossible.

I would be anxious to hear what your impressions are on what you find (lane wise that is). I've see some BIG scores come out of California .. have a feeling you will be surprised at the shot here in NC! Since you will be trying the lanes in the evenings .. I think you can expect a little drier then you are use too.

Please write back and compare the Ca.NC shot!

Thanks!

It should be fun no matter what.  I was thinking of bringing my hammers but they were very hard to find even used.  Maybe I will bring my tropical storm or my polished mission and see what happens.

I just got here.  I don't know the area very well although GPS should help.  I am working in the day and I may or may not have colleagues I will be hanging out with.  $1.50 is pretty cheap.

It's pretty hot here right now...I think it touched 106 and it's 93 or something like that.  Thank goodness for a/c in the hotel!

Went to Buffaloes Lanes but they closed at 10 and i wasn't able to bowl.  I will try again tomorrow or Wednesday.

I finally got to bowl and it was at Buffaloe lanes in Raleigh, NC.  I used my Mission with pin under the under place in the bridge...not sure pin to pap length or dual angle.  It's at 1k and then hit with storm finish 2.

The lane was standard THS with bounce outside of 6.  However it was pretty slick for THS and if I missed at the bottom I would go washout.  I did that twice and made sure I had my wrist turned in.  I didn't have any problems after that adjustment.

The approach was pretty slippery and considering the humidity that was surprising.  I ended up taking my time and my ball speed was in the 15.75-16.00(at the pins?) range for most first balls.  I didn't have any heels or soles to change to.  It wasn't hard to get pocket standing 20 and getting to around 8-9 at the break point.  Wide of that meant 4-7 or 1-4-7(left that twice) or sometimes flat or ring 7.  It depended on why I went wide.  I didn't cover my single pins spares well...missing too many.  My middle block was 225, 236, 225 with only two opens.  One was missed single pin and the other 7-9(surprised me that happened)  The beginning 2 games I was warming up and the last two I was playing with different lines outside with different hand positions.

Overall, pretty nice place and well maintained.

There was a special after 9pm - 2 bucks a game.  I visited all three buffaloe lanes but for one reason or another I was only able to bowl at the raleigh one, ie I left my thumbs in my backpack and that was at the hotel 20 miles away and I couldn't make it back before they closed.

Surprisingly, it was not that dry.  Maybe, my mission isn't too aggressive and I could control the breakpoint.  The house I practice in CA has wood lanes and I use mostly urethane now because I have to get inside too much and the angles are not that good.  Outside with urethane there allows me to keep my line long and really score well.  My favorite ball is my axis weighted blue hammer.

The other local bowl in CA I occasionally go to has amf hpl lane beds and they don't put out enough oil.  I think its 18ml and I actually have to swing the blue hammer.  I stand 25 and stay around 8-10 at the breakpoint because anything wide of that the ball jumps like a reactive ball.

Buffaloe lanes wasn't too dry compared to the home lanes.  It had a good puddle in the middle that extended to the 7-8 board.  The approaches were really slick there.  That caused me a little concern but I took my time and didn't fall down. :)
