Playing a true Reverse Block
« on: February 23, 2013, 06:27:27 PM »
I'm going to be entering a local Crown of the Hill tournament in a few weeks and wanted to get some ideas on how best to play a reverse block.  I haven't had a ton of experience on a true reverse block (it will be my first tournament in since coming back to bowling a few years ago).  Here is what I found out about the condition that is being laid out:

45 ft oil pattern
* True reverse block (less oil in the middle, more on the outside)
* People that have bowled on this already have nicknamed it "slick city"
* AMF HPL synthetics

Now here are the stats of my game:
* 19-22mph ball speed
* Tweener (straight game is my A game, can move inside when/as needed)
* 380 to 420 rev rate
* Low track

The balls I was considering taking with me to the house so far are:
* Defiant (pin down, 3-1/2 x 5 x 3, 2000 grit surface)
* Rogue Cell (pin above, 3-1/2 x 5 x 3, OOB)
* Infinite Theory (pin above, 4 x 4 x 1, OOB)
* Outlaw (pin above, 5 x 3 x 4, x-hole at P3, OOB)
* Hy-Road (pin drilled out, 4 x 4 x 2, OOB)
* Frantic (pin to the right of the ring finger, 4 x 4 x 2, OOB)

With that being said, what would be some suggestions that you guys might have?  This can include anything from ball choice to ways of playing the pattern.  One of the things I've thought about so far is playing straighter to avoid over/under with the pattern.  I also know for sure that I would slow up the approach to keep the speed lower.

Thanks for the ideas so far.  I checked the house out last Sunday to get an idea of how to play for this Sunday.  The 45ft pattern definitely had more oil on the right/left sides of the lane and the majority of people were playing deeper.  As the night went on, I saw that the middle completely blew apart and the people playing deeper were paying the price.  A lot of 3 game qualifying sets were less than 600.

My plan of attack is that I'll be bringing my pin-down Defiant (taking it down to 2000), my pin-up Rogue Cell, my Outlaw (drilled for heavy roll), and my Frantic (if I need to play really straight).  I figure with speed/rev rate, I can play straighter and be further to the right of most everyone else.  Then as the middle breaks down and most everyone is moving left, I could have a better chance in qualifying since I'll have more chances to break the pattern down the way I want.

Oh, so people were shim wrecking. Threaten to hit people when they do that. Doesn't always help me, but at least they think twice about reaching in their bag for the green scotch brite!

(Kidding. Don't threaten anyone with bodily harm)

Here is one way you can practice for it on a house shot.

If you are right handed, play only the left side of the lane, using 20 as the one board. Stay within the left half. If you go past 20, you know that is a bad shot. Since you will have friction to your left and lots of oil on the right, you will get a real sense of how tight your line has to be.
