urg.. Blew a 700!
« on: July 11, 2004, 08:41:45 PM »
I bowled state sunday, team event.

First game, 235 (1 open)
Second game, 235 (1 open)
Third game, 216 (2 opens, 1st and 3rd frame, both ten pins)
=686

Funny thing is, in the 3rd game, if i could have gotten those 2 ten pins, i would have had it.

channel surfer -- I have been working on a backup ball to throw at ten pins all summer (don't bowl a league in summer).  The seven pin is easy to cover because the ball is hooking into it, so why not use the same advantage for the ten pin?  I've gotten pretty good at it and think it will raise my average at least five pins this winter.  --  JohnP

Hey JohnP, why don't you try throwing it straight? Then you could do that for all your spares. A plastic ball helps also.

also, to help throw it straighter... pull your index finger in, and put your pinky way out.. also letting your wrist break/ open will help the ball roll more end over end. by doing this, I can shoot 10 pins with even my raging inferno!

It may seem like the opens in the last game are what cost you your 700 series. But, if you think about it, if you'd been clean the first two games, those opens in the last game wouldn't have mattered.
Nice bowling anyway.

JohnP:
I dont think throwing backup at the 10pin is gonna help because you have to contend with more oil in the middle, less on the outside (generally), so it is like bowling on a reverse crown/block - if you miss either way, the lanes are going to make it worse, not better.

CS-- know exactly how you feel a clean game is the most important thing I could never pick up the ten. I tried everything and more now I don't miss them use your pinky and ring finger, find your comfort line to pick up the ten pin because the ball w/go dead straight. Make sure your release is not lazy/stay down or you will still miss them.

I very rarely miss single pin spares anymore since going to plastic.  I had one drilled with near max finger weight and no side weight.  I also pitched the fingers away so I don't lift as hard.  When I throw at my spares I stay behind the ball uncock and also flatten the wrist and go for 0 axis rotation and open my hand flat to kill the revs.  When Ron C was out this way he was teaching us how to throw straight and pick up the 3-6-9-10 by going straight down the boards.  Since then I work on that part of my game and my spare percentage has gone way up.

Now only if I could string the strikes together.

bad1_andy -- For some reason, I've never been able to be accurate with a straight ball, whether made straight by hand position or by going plastic.  I do use a urethane ball (Black Hammer) for all my spares, but still have problems hooking away from the ten pin (THS, very dry on the outside).  I have found that I am more accurate with a backup release than a straight release, and am having success with that, so I'm going to try it in league this fall.  I'm willing to do whatever works.  --  JohnP
